Stalking trousers?

I have been though god knows how many pairs of different types of “water proof” trousers over the years, none have lasted more than 18 months some not even a year.
At the minute I am using a pair of German army Goretex trousers next to my skin with a pair of Stealth photographers’ trousers over the top. I got the idea from a Jacket I had which has a gortex liner with soft suede outer. The goretex keeps the water out but the outer trousers keep it quiet and have plenty of space for keeping things in the pockets.
I find that trousers almost always leak on the knees so once the goretex is holed you just buy another pair of cheap army goretex trousers for £20.

So all the advantages of them £270 trousers that Bushwear sell for half the price, the only disadvantage is they can be warm for the summer, but any other pair of Goretex lined trousers will be just as warm.

Got my self a pair of these last year.

After wearing them for a few months & got the jacket to go with them.
Not cheep but they are the best I have found to date.
They where recomended to me by a FC ranger. He has been wearing them for a couple of years, said they where one of the best he has used.

I had a day out on the hill at the begining of last week.
Wet & windy all day.
With a good pair of boot & gatters & even after crawling about & sitting in the heather I was still dry.

£270 (Inc P&P)
does the days stalking come with that?!

Well I bought a pair in 2003. I have worn them 3-9 times a week from November to March including beating (for the last 3 years).

They are warm, pretty waterproof, completely silent and very hard wearing. In that time I have nearly destroyed 2 pair of deer hunter rams so these are better value but they are too warm for all but winter use.

The rams are not very hard wearing, are not hot and are extremely comfortable. If you get wet in them they remain comfortable. The tear quite easily but mend well. I gave up taking care of mine ages ago but they still come back for more. I will be putting them on tonight.

Harkila pro hunters are hard wearing, slim cut, not the quietest but cool to wear. They do let in water at which point they are actually quite cold and not very comfortable.

Of the 3 I think the Rams are the most versatile, they used to be quite cheap.

I definitely agree even though I am now getting damp through my ancient ram trousers I never really seem that bothered and it's only when I am crawling about if it's raining and im am walking they seem fine and as you say they are dam comfy! They are very light and quiet. The only time I have ever got cold was when I was at the hinds 3 years ago and I got an absolute soaking it was coming sideways! But I was warm from excursion until I gotback to the larder and had to wait an hour and a half for the other stalker to come in by the time the lights of hisArgo appeared I was dam cold!

Well went to bush wear and looked at the harkila and Swedteam goretex trousers and I don't think they are for me. Waiting for the new Swedteam ranger trousers and the new Deerhunter ram trousers to come in hopefully Monday, stopped off at Crockarts on the way home and saw the new Ridgeline pintail smock and at £89 I couldn't resist! Should be a good light weight smock when the monsoon II smock is too thick and hot. I would recomend it purely on comfort but havnt had a chance to try it in the wet yet.

As they say spend your money once

Tahr,

I agree with the principle but as yet have not tried it on trousers.

On my torso I wear an Arktis windproof smock for stalking which i have treated with Cotton Proof, if it rains hard I put on the MOD gore-tex liner underneath. It keeps the gore-tex protected, me dry and all my pockets still available for use! Cheap solution. I layer with Helly Hansen Lifa (Ice Crew H/H when cold) to wick sweat away from the body, and I like the Swazi Bush Shirt as a mid layer as it is long in the back.

Now I will try the Gore-tex MOD trousers under a cheaper outer in foul weather. Thank you!

I had wondered at the Fjallraven Drev trousers as a compramise, but they are £140 (on offer).

But poor men have to have poor ways, as the saying goes ;)
