Strelok Pro versus Applied Ballistics

The primary advantage of AB is their CDM's (Custom Drag Models). If you're not shooting long range, it's a bit overkill for average hunting ranges (sub 300yds).

To be clear, AB is a very thoroughly built calculator, but it can be a bit much for the uninitiated and/or those unconcerned with long range accuracy of the ballistic curves.

Would you suggest it's more suited to those shooting out beyond 600yds (I am)? Not at live quarry I hasten to add.

Quarry aside, yes, if you're shooting past 600yds, AB is absolutely suited. As mentioned, the CDM's remove the archaic approach of calculating a curve based on a linear degradation of BC as the bullet slows down. The CDM's are generated from real world data collected out to 900yds via a doppler radar, so the "curve" is much more accurate, and if the inputs are correct, "truing" is not usually necessary. There is still some debate on the accuracy of their aerodynamic jump and Coriolis effects, but the curve itself is usually spot on.

Given our general lack of access to land/facilities for leisurely testing and gathering data, still a worthwhile venture ? It's not a huge sum to be fair, and compared with the cost of reloading conumables, would pale into insignificance.

It's really a personal decision. For a casual user, probably not. For someone that routinely likes to reach out and hit targets, then yes, well worth the cost. Just depends on whether you have the equipment to drive the data inputs (temp, density altitude, humidity, DoF, current latitude, etc.), and want/need that degree of accuracy at range...

To be clear, my experience with just the AB app is limited, since most of my AB experience is with a Kestrel 5700AB (which links to a AB specific Kestrel app on the phone). But as I understand it, the AB app is intended for those with a cheaper Kestrel weather station (or other data collection methods), but want the same CDM capability.

Perfect, thank you. I use a Kestrel Drop, which provides all information bar wind speed (I have a Kestrel wind meter.

My kestrel 5700 AB elite is the dogs bollocks especially when linked with my Leica 3200.com binos .

As said if your shooting close range ( out to 300m ) then stick with StrelokPro .

A question: if you have Strelok on your iPhone and upgrade to a new model won't the app be transfered along with all the other apps and data when you do the set-up?

Cheers

In theory, both iOS and Android now have a cloning app/function to transfer apps and data from old devices to new (just did it on my new tablet this past weekend). But the apps don't always transfer over cleanly, and sometimes require reloading from the app store. It's really app dependent, and how they have been integrated into that operating system (what resources and libraries it needs to function).

OK, thanks. I have it on my iPad as well and that's were I do most of the work - generating drop tables that I tape to my stocks or at the range. Will never change that one for a new model. Use it exclusively for Strelok.

Cheers

I have recently upgraded my iPhone… all apps were transferred with the exception of Strelok 🙄

Both the free and Pro version wouldn’t install and were listed as no longer available.
Shame as they were very good solvers.

Kind regards,
Bob.
