Stuck case upon chambering.

Went to range today to experiment with my Limb Saver barrel harmonizer. I put two rounds in the magazine, pulled the charging handle back and let it run home. Boom, first shot went off as expected, click goes the second shot. Despite my best efforts, I could not get the charging handle to move at all. I had a plastic hammer with me so I tried to tap it open. It would not budge so I gave it a stout whack. I broke the charging handle, even sheared off a metal piece of it. Went home and tried to open it with a cleaning rod, can’t get it to budge. This BAR is becoming a handful. I ran my ammo through a Lyman loaded ammo checker and found 2 that would not fit. One just a hair and the other quite a bit. I guess the brass on the stuck case was out of spec. I checked each piece after I resized them, they all fit perfectly. I’m guessing it must be brass spring back. They were once fired FC brass cases. Short of taking this to the gunsmith, any ideas how to get this loaded round out safely?

Full diameter brass rod . Rod on the deck and the rifle up so the mass of the rifle helps. And you can hold it better and you won't damage the stock.

Its possible what the fireing pin are sticking out

and it went click so could the firing pin be protruding? Whacking a rod with a hammer may not be a good idea

In the above link the chap could not get info from browning how to remove the barrel.
He hints it maybe pressed and pinned .

It also looks like to first disassemble the rifle the forend has to come off but the bolt has to come back a ways to do that.


Its not a J. Browning design but his sons. Pa would of made it an easy fix!

Whacking the power transfer rod between the gasport and boltcarrier might work.

Thanks all for the ideas. I’m thinking a trip to the gun smith is in order. In addition to the stuck live round. It is going to need a new charging handle with accompanying latch, spring and pin. I am not in a position to Mount the new latch. Spring and pin. I’m going to bite the bullet and pay the smith. I found all the parts online for about $50. I will have to blue the charging handle though. The bluing in the bottle will be fine. I’m still confused by the brass spring back. 3 out of 17 loaded rounds had some degree of spring back. Very strange. The Remington brass and the nickel plated Fed cases did not seem to have that, at least none got stuck. The RCBS dies I use were specifically made for use in this rifle. They were made in the 1970s and are stamped as such, I found them on eBay. I believe they are just small base dies. We will see.

From what I've seen of the strip down video you won't strip it down without a charging handle! Not unless you can rotate the bolt head another way.
You might be able to remove the trigger and hammer group though.
