We are pleased to offer the position of a Student Gamekeeper in the beautiful surroundings of Strathconon Estate. This position will provide experience in best practices for deer management, nature conservation and sporting activities. Working with Highland ponies offers a valuable chance to acquire knowledge, contributing significantly to the estate management. You will be working as part of a team, so effective teamwork and communication skills are essential, while ensuring adherence to estate policies and standards.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
· Work closely with the immediate manager to plan and execute estate activities that maintain appropriate deer populations in line with nature conservation objectives.
· Follow estate policies and best practices for deer management, ensuring sustainability and ethical standards.
· Maintain the deer larder to the required standards as stipulated by SQWV regulations.
· Guide and accompany clients on red deer stalking excursions, ensuring professional and safe experience.
· Undertake habitat monitoring and other conservation-related tasks as directed.
· Working with highland ponies adds an important aspect to estate management, as their well-being directly impacts their ability to assist with deer stalking and other sporting activities
· Provide general assistance to the estate sporting team, supporting conservation initiatives and estate management tasks as needed.
· Assist with the maintenance of gardens and repair of machinery, roads, tracks, and bridges, ensuring accessibility and structural integrity.
Qualifications & Skills:
· I have a strong interest in gamekeeping, wildlife conservation, and land management.
· Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and handle physical tasks efficiently.
· Excellent teamwork and communication skills to coordinate with managers, clients, and other estate staff.
· A responsible and ethical approach to deer management and conservation practices.
· Some familiarity with machinery maintenance, estate infrastructure, and habitat monitoring (training can be provided).
