Subaru Independent Specialist

Just bought an Outback as the new shooting vehicle and was wondering if anyone on here can recommend a good independent specialist near Swindon?

I am not into sticking bits from Halfords all over it or mapping it to 500 BHP, just accessing somebody who knows they’re way around them and won’t break the bank.

last local garage i used put wrong plugs in it couldn't work out why it wouldn't fire lol i've just gone through another set of brake pads lol so a trip needed

Thanks for thinking of me, but we don't deal with day to day servicing, and I can't think of anyone to recommend local to the OP.

I will say the following, especially if it's a turbo,


1) Use a decent quality oil.

2) Check the oil level regularly, especially if it's a 2.5lt engine, they can use a bit.

3) Avoid cheap pattern parts.

4) Avoid "flat out" runs on the motorway, to see what it will do

Richard is very capable, but to be honest, any "good" garage/mechanic, can do a standard service, fluids, plugs, etc'. For a cambelt change, I would suggest someone more experienced with Subaru's.

IMHO opinion and not looking to start a bun fight, Richard is a very capable Subaru specialist having maintained my friend's S202 and my old Spec C type ra. Subaru4you, Engine Tuner and RCM would also be worthy of consideration.

I think it's more a case of who is practical for Koenig to get to, remembering he just want's a competent standard service.

There will be very few reputable Subaru specialists I'm not aware of, there will of course be some.

I know all of the companies mentioned here. All have been customers, Richard used to work for me regularly, and he's very capable. Len at Subaru 4U has been around for years, and you won't go wrong with Matt, & Olly Clark, but they are at the upper end.

I can only say that the other company mentioned, are right down in Plymouth, which based on my direct experience, is just about far enough away from Koenig, to be in his best interest. I will say no more !

Remember, Koenig isn't looking for modifications, bolt on cr*p, tuning, or remapping, just a good reliable service.

Subaru's left as they left the factory, and driven by normal, "grown up drivers", are very reliable

You are lucky if you can find any competent mechanic let alone a competent Subaru mechanic.

Fair comments Laterel. Your last paragraph rings very true. Too many chav chariots on the scene now, I get my kicks from vintage tractors and a 1959 Land Rover now

I had a 2 litre Impreza turbo, the classic shape. Luckily a good friend who is a very good mechanic serviced it for me at his garage. We always used genuine parts, high quality oil and stuck to the recommended service schedules. I had to get the front calipers sent off to be rebuilt once with new pistons etc as they would occasionally stick and warp the front discs which was a recognised problem on the car's. I always let the car tick over for a few minutes after hard use to maintain the oil flow to the turbo rather than just switching it off. This helps to maintain the turbo apparently. If your car is a non turbo, that obviously wouldn't apply. I always ran it on super unleaded fuel which was recommended . Don't expect high MPG though as the boxer engines combined with permanent 4WD are not economical by modern standards. Even though the car is 4WD also don't expect miracles in snow unless you have proper winter tyres.

It's a shame Subaru uk don't import the Impreza's anymore or I would get a modern one. I also don't like the CVT gearboxes that they now seem to have switched over to on the latest Subarus. They limit the towing capacity considerably from what I have read.
