I’ve shot no where near the deer that @Norfolk Deer Search has but agree completely. I’ve spent a lot of time mulling over “shot damage” and trying to figure out how to minimise it.
I’ve shot a range of bullets in different calibres and honestly, I can’t find a pattern! I used to use 95gn GS customs in 6.5x284 (at around 3560fps) and they were very effective. Not noticeable more carcass damage than some 130gn Accubonds I was running in 260 (at 2550fps).
I think the longer a carcass spends lying on its side the more blood will seep between fascia and the more coagulated blood you get (sometime spreading right down one side) but otherwise too many variables involved.
I now just accept that putting 2 big holes in something in a place that causes massive blood loss results in meat damage now and then.

I knew an old slaughter man I knew was bomber, his rule, if it takes any longer than 5 mins to bone scrap it, not worth the hassle!
That’s a rule I work to, to this day.

A mate of mine who shoots a lot of deer has banned RWS EVO GREEN for being very destructive.
I have no experience of them personally, but I do trust him and believe him.
But then again, I don’t shoot factory in anything - homeloads every time.
Interesting. This is for highland reds, so I'm looking for decent stopping power and they get good reports in general. Do you know what he was shooting?

For stopping power I find Lapua Naturalis 170 gr unbeatable. Use them for boar and reds all the time.

Reading this and other threads it seems that there is a big difference between what people regard as good performance from a bullet. Some want maximum knock down power (if there is such a thing) and minimum run distances, even at the cost of slightly more meat loss. I fall into this category. Others want minimum meat damage at all costs and are perhaps in order to achieve this are more tolerant of deer running on. Increasing bullet weight may increase velocity at the muzzle, ballistic coefficient and will increase sectional density and therefore penetration but do these changes matter? To my mind BC and muzzle velocity are linked in so far as that it is critical to maintain a threshold terminal velocity at impact. The required TV to ensure expansion seems to vary between different bullet designs and probably between different weights within the same family. My preference is to maintain a terminal velocity of 2200fps for weight retention bullets like the TSX, TTSX and Fox as this pretty much guarantees proper expansion. Using a 130g TTSX @ 3000fps MV this gives me 285 metres of range before expansion gets less certain. If I use a 168 grain TTSX at MV of 2650fps I reach 2200fps at 215 metres but maintain better penetrating power and momentum. Now bearing in mind I have never recovered a 130g TTSX from a deer in over 20 years of use I fail to see why having greater penetration would be advantageous to me but the increased MV does carry forward to greater effective range which is useful. Would the 150g TTSX offer that Goldilocks sweet spot for me, perhaps, but when the deer hit the deck fast and the meat damage to me and the game dealer is acceptable with the 130g bullet, I can’t see any advantages to a heavier bullet or any great reason to change.

I think there is far too much thinking involved with copper bullets.
I never even considered half the horlicks that’s spouted now days, I just loaded them up and shot deer.
None of this drop a weight and drive them at light speed even came into it.
All this light bullets at 3000fps really does make me chuckle

You don’t like lighter copper bullets because of the increased meat damage, yet you don’t bother using the shoulders? Is that not contradictory?
