Summer vs. Winter coat.

I saw a doe blacktail deer today in it’s summer coat. It is really amazing how their coats change from season to season. Summer coat is a light brown, kind of a reddish brown. Winter coat is a solid gray that blends in perfectly with hardwood trees. Guessing it’s a gene that causes this. Really quite remarkable how this happens.

Have to say, one of my favourite things to see is the transformation in roe from their drab grey winter coat to their stunning coppery red summer outfit. 👍
Absolutely. At the moment they are like
Mangy camels, as they go through the moult and skinning them can be a mess. But seeing the short coated ginger roe appear is a joy.

I’m impressed/ frustrated by how perfectly camouflaged a roe deer is in a winter clearfell of grey/brown mixture- they can be almost invisible.
