Suspended gralloch.

I vary between ground and suspended gralloch, especially for muntjac (easy to hang

I did a suspended gralloch, off a tree-trunk, this morning, and I present some pictures.

Please do come forth with suggestions and constructive criticism. Being a relative novice, I live to learn.

The set-up: dog lead round tree-trunk, pulley and heave-no.

The deer in question, obligatory with rifle:

I didn’t manage to get it higher, but it was enough, said my back:233F5C12-FA7A-417C-A65A-7ADB9BF2CBFD.jpeg233F5C12-FA7A-417C-A65A-7ADB9BF2CBFD.jpeg

I feel, I ought to get the deer a bit higher up. The black bag is for the gralloch (we are supposed to remove it)

Suggestions for further improvement are gratefully received.

Many thanks.

For Muntjac and Roe only the Napier Tree Hugger kit is very good and lightweight. Comes in its own little belt pouch too. About £22. Saves carrying the gambrel.

I use something similar but costs only a couple of quid of EEbay or amazon. Initially I bought 1.5m or orange webbing and had loops stiched in.

then I just bought a large orange climbing loop and it does the same job and is strong enough to wrap around reds for dragging.
Any webbing around a tree will self bite with weight applied... just needs to be long enough to go round the circumference with overlap.

What 308 Tikka says seems fair enough. I prefer suspended gralloching if I can, and I can do Roe and Muntjac on my own easily enough. The big lowland Reds I am lucky enough to have access to 3/4 times a year are a different matter however! Best get some type of pulley involved!

Sorry, what is a climbing loop? Any links/pictures?

I just hang s hooks in both loops once on tree.
I dont use a carabiner to link them and then hang a gambrel as it self bites but i woukd think that method works.

try it out. It will cost £6 not £22 although you dont get a fancy pouch!

I only do suspended gralloch, unles i'm in the desert.

Get yourself a Napier Apex Auto Lift, and save your back... You can easily lift a red completely off the ground efortless...

The carabiner/S hooks (I use both) are important to link my pulley. For a fallow buck, a pulley is invaluable. For Muntjac, one can just lift them up by hand.

Take more time around the splitting of the haunches, assuming it was dead when you got that far - no need to go fast when you're best to go careful. If you do it right there should be no hair and the two haunches without cuts or lumps from the other haunch adhering. You're not alone in receiving this lesson from me! TBH I've never done a suspended gralloch, I find it easier and cleaner on the ground, but have no hang-ups about hung up deer carcasses, I just personally have always found it easier to make a clean job using the deck, with the usual tussock or gradient to supply the gravity element.

Once you get the jacket off, post a pic or two of the carcass, for educational purposes!

Very graphic, you're getting there my friend. As my schoolmaster would say "Could do better". No nettles in evidence:rofl:

Must come to our finishing school and pay attention again. 😇😇😇😇

Hi Free, I had only done them a few times, always did them either on the ground or in the larder when not too far. Rm100 is as he says fairly new to the game and he has been out with me, hence the Mickey take. A good lad and willing to learn more, we'll have him out again with us when the Does start and my young chap will show him more than a few wrinkles regarding stalking. :tiphat:

I would, but it belongs to the estate!

Alternatively a short length of rope that you can throw over a branch crotch and tie off to fasten your pulleys to.
The above or a variant of. Here using a single uncut rope for pulleys, casting over an accommodating branch and tying off:

Being able to walk around the beast is a massive advantage as distinct from it pinning you against the trunk when you come to tackle the waste discharge plumbing!
