Swapping ruined moderator for identical one

Evening all,

Had a bit of a mishap and ruined the threads on my .22 moderator.

I was wondering, if I ask the RFD I originally purchased it from to order me an identical one, and I hand the ruined one back to him for destruction, would this count as a "repair" or sort of a "manufacturer replacement" (although I would be paying for it, as it was entirely my fault) and therefore not require a variation?

Or would I need a one-for-one?

The moderator is listed on my FAC but unserialised.

Legally you need to do a variation, if it has no markings or serial numbers how anyone would know is another question

Pretty sure that requires a 141, however if an airgun mod will fit you could buy one if you so wished without the variation

When you say ruined the threads, did you fit by hand or something else, in my mind I'm thinking running a tap through it should restore it.

If the mod you have is sold as suitable for air guns, buy one for an “ air gun”

Your rfd could swap it, but he would have to be willing to scrap the old one to get it off his books.

The law is an ass regarding moderators

It’s a 1:1 and they’ll ask for evidence you’ve disposed of your old one before you can apply for a new one - at least that’s what people I know who’ve been through it say

They can sometimes be accommodating mind
I bought a new Wildcat P8 from eBay (£50 lol). Which was listed as an air gun mod

Cops were fine with me buying and having an rfd put it on ticket so again , depends on the mood and the person
