This popped in my Facebook feed. Thankfully my little girl is about to graduate from University.

Clearly Swarovski are starting to get youngsters onto their brand at an early age. I would like think its a good thing to get kids into nature early on, but parents really need this sort of expense?

 
It's not clear how close they will focus. I have a pair of Pentax Papilio designed for primarily for close work on insects etc. They are light and very easy to handle for a kid's first pair, having a a conventional hinge plus full size focus, and are cheap at about £100 for 6.5 or 8.5 x 21. The USP is the close focus : 0.5m or 18 inches but they are pretty good at a distance in everyday conditions. Downside : they are not waterproof but even the high end stuff wasn't until recently and we managed
