Swarovski, S&B or Kahles

I want a new scope, it's going on my CZ 527 in .22 hornet.
I have been using a Swarovski 6x42, and recently for a change a S&B 6x42 which is lighter.
Now having admitted to myself that more magnification would be a good idea what do I buy, money is strictly limited to
around a £100 plus the proceeds from selling the Swaro and S&B so maybe £750 to £800, if I go with a 30mm tube I will need mounts as well.
I have seen a Kahles 2.5-10 x 50 for sale just in my price range, the big question is am I going to notice much difference in optics quality.
And I should say at this point the S&B is not as good as the Swarovski in that department, both are clear but the Swaro is just better, even though it is 10 years older.

Kahles or Swarovski 8x56 are both great scopes (use both) and you should be able to get one 2nd hand for under 450 easy. Simple point and shoot with no messing. You wouldnt need much more than 8x and how many times have you thought ' damm wish i had a 3x50 scope!!!' You could also get a new meopta for that price and they're supposed to be pretty good. The Kahles scope you mention would be pretty good though.

Hi Neil,
I would go for the Swarovski 8 x 56.
Try http://www.rmacleod.co.uk/ he has a good range of scopes and also sells used scopes.
He currently has a Swarovski 8 x 56 with a 4A recticle at £695.

An 8x56 was a consideration, but falls down on 2 things, not enough for 250 yard rabbits, and too much for 10 yard ones.
My Hornet is my main rifle and is used from almost point blank to 250 yards on targets ranging from rats through corvids to fox.

I have had all the scopes you mention, I was fortunate enough to have a pretty much unlimited access to loan scopes and binos for which I would write reveiws for Gun Mart. I would be more than happy to fit the Kahles, being part of Swarovski optics are top notch but the controls tend to be a bit more basic. In all probability you are not going to use it at less than 6 mag, but you can if need to, a big plus point.
Your return on a very good condition used Swaro or Schmidt 6x42 would be circa £300.

I have used several Kahles scopes on rifles over the last few years. One 4x from the 1970,s was outstanding.The more modern 4-12x52 is excellent.

I thought about the 'Duralyt' but why go with a bottom of the range Zeiss when there is better about at my money ?
I agree secondhand from macloeds is a good idea, but at the moment his stock seems limited at my price, £100 above is OK.

Kahles sounds a good bet for you. Swaro as you know would be my no.1 choice - 3-12 or similar. My Minox may be coming available....(for when your eyesight gets really bad)?!

Still thinking, and it's making my brain hurt. Lol
As for the IOR, finding 35 mm rings for a CZ527 would be interesting ?
Other than the multiple hits from the ugly stick it looks ok.

At the moment it looks like a choice between a ex demo Kahles or a new Zeiss Classic both in 2.5-10x50, and they are within £30 of each other.

If you're turning down the Minox (!), then it has to be the Kahles. Worth a squizz at Meopta as a previous has mentioned.

Kahles are excellent scopes, i have S&b and swaro but my Kahles is my preferred stalking scope. i sold a 3x9 x 42 kahles a couple of years ago to a friend who thinks it superb and it sits on his 270 and always will. i do regret selling it now but at the time i did not appreciate just how good it was, i will not make that mistake again !
Meopta are also excellent scopes, i have a 3 -12 x50 and i would not sell that either very good for the money, had mine about 12 years ago and it really was a bargain then.

i take it you have not tryed the "bottom of the range" zeiss Duralyt as i think they make s&b look like a toilet roll tube but feel free to spend more money for less scope

You think, I think is all about what "our" eyes see.
The Duralyt is the entry model in the Zeiss riflescope range, that said I have looked through one at a show and liked it, but it is not as good as the Classic Diavari.
As for comparing it to the S&B, well I can only speak for the S&B 6x42 which I have, it's isn't as good as the Swaro, so not that surprised you think that way.

To finish up, my mind is now made up, brain has stopped hurting and now it's just a pain in the wallet
New Zeiss Classic Diavari 2.5-10x50 is on it's way to me as of lunch time today

I had a Meopta when I started but now have two variable 6-24x5 Swaros.

Cant look beyond them. Also great for older folk ....

Have you gave any thought to a Nightforce?

Not many people on here seem to use them from what i can see, maybe for a good reason... i dont know?

I have 4 scopes - 1 Zeiss, 1 Swarovski & 2 Nightforce.
To my eye the Nightforce glass is every bit equal to if not better than the other 2 brands.

You can pick up a descent secong hand, high mag one for £800-£900.

I have in the past, I look at them and can't get past the looks, fine on top of a tacticool type rifle.
For me at least that is where they belong, as for optical quality, some say ok, the one I tried didn't impress.

Anyway, job done new Zeiss arrived today, rings should be here tomorrow.
