Taxidermy - skull mounts

Has anyone tried something like this before?

Wall space very much starts to become a premium - and I don’t want to encroach on the entire house or eventually herself will get upset,(been very tolerant so far).

I was tempted to try this as a mount for a red stag skull I have and put it on a surface in the reloading room / man cave. The Americans always seem quite inventive with their taxidermy.

I take it a random bit of deadwood will likely be rotten and not up to the task for supporting the skull?

Can’t wait to see the results 👍

This is going to be interesting as I can see the logic of a desk mount for anything smaller than a roe buck, but not a blooming red, jeez you must have a big desk. 😄

I thought a scaled up version floor standing would offer an alternative for a red stag, my only worry would be the points of the tines being at eye level, for that reason (and the fact they’re massive and take up a lot of space, all my reds are as high up on walls as I can get them!

True! Biggest problem is I’ve half a dozen reds alone. Short of putting them up in the garage for cobwebs, I might have to get creative.

Slight risk of every section of the house looking like a haunted castle otherwise with skulls everywhere

I only have 3 medal reds in the house (along with fallow, roe, munty and CWD plus a smattering of African game for good measure, several more of most species in the garage, I keep the ones in the garage in the hope that one day I’ll have a house big enough for them all, but they do need a lot of wall! Occasionally I’ll rotate them and swap for a bit of a change!

Another option why also not go into the american style and skull cap them? It might not save wall space in that sense, but it would allow you (depending on antlers) too maybe stack two or three In the space and height only one would fit.

There's a not terrible example of what I mean, just a smaller shield and cut skull, depending on antler configuration (say a wide stag on the bottom, and a narrow stag ontop) It might end up looking quite nice.

Another post to keep it tidy but you could try one of these Skull Max Skull Brackets last I checked when I was trying to get shipping quotes for some WT heads they only usually weighed in at 1.5-2kg for a buck (dependant on antlers!) so even tiny scottish reds are quite a bit bigger, and a lot taller.

Having one of those brackets screwed into the wall sitting flush with the intended height off your base I feel like would work, You'd then set your base up and rotate the skull into the correct position - Looks nice, can be taken apart in seconds too showcase the entire skull, rotated side to side for cleaning etc and off course no accidental falling reds into directly into your chest/face, It would be secure but still practical.

Interesting- I have a set of sika antlers without skull, so is there a skull replacement available for fitting the antlers to from a UK supplier.

Errrrh I think the closest to a reproduction sika would be JHT's Reproduction Red Deer Skulls, but when you look at the price (£50) you would hundred percent be better asking someone here on the forums for some cut skulls honestly.

Plus like installation there's no real difference, both require drilling into the re-pro and metal rods inserted regardless.
