No-then again,at least they would work.....unlike some Bavarians.
And.......
They are Tigerstriped:coat::drool::roll:
As for the job Simon needs a dog for-no problem.Terriers can find dead deer-even a chihuahua could.
Borders for work-they are out there.....some bloody good ones too.
Then again why not get a BGS-they are the size of terriers now as some people have bred them when they have no knowledge of the breed and look nothing like a BGS nor work like one:norty:

Give me a bell Simon :thumb:

simon that's kind of you if I cant get hold of a copy I will pm you and of course pay postage many thanks dave

I had a cesky terrier for years. He would find deer OK. Had to have him tied with a lead in the high seat as he would try and do a air attack if a deer past to near the high seat.

A typical terrier then:rofl:
I remember a lot of years ago-sitting waiting for roe to appear with a friend in his truck.
Terrier in back within canopy.
Shot roe.
Then truck started rocking back and forth and said terrier barking(well whining)and bouncing off all sides of canopy.
An experienced terrier :scared:

I use a Patterdale terrier for my deer eleven months of the year and then den's in the spring.she act's like my lab when working the deer walk's to heel stay when calling the deer can' t ask for any better you only get what you put into there training out of them

FC ranger we used to deal with on some land owned by the estate had a cracking Border terrier for that purpose.Very good at the job it was too.

First working deer dogs I saw 20 years ago were Borders and I have just found one that I am beginning to train for tracking. Picking up some blood and feet next week at a park cull for purpose.

A friend and I went to Scotland stalking doe's and hind's and the stalker up there had a terrier that came out with us all the time. When laying in the heather watching my friend and the stalker glass some deer up in front I had some company sat right beside me in the pouring rain not a sound and no more than a foot from my side, he was watching the deer. If he realised he was in your way he would move to one side and let you past. If he caught a sent he let you know with the stance he gave it was a great heads up on a forthcoming situation. We came on to a red hind it was a very quick shot off the sticks I was sure the shot was good but deer just went like it was a complete miss. We went to the place of the shot and on are way there, the terrier was just in front picked up the blood trail and went like the wind we followed the trail the dog came back to find us and took us straight to the hind,it was awesome. So it will be a terrier for me when my spaniel is no longer around. I would like a warm lap in the winter up in the high seat.

I use a Border and she lives for deer, she will follow blood trails of several hundred metres with ease and also just a foot for the same distance. Pretty sure she would do more but I cant be bothered to lay longer trails. Her only vice is sometimes she is off like a rocket so I have to use a harness most of the time. When she finds a deer she like to get stuck in too!

Sorry to hear that Jimbo and thanks for the comments about Piper. She has been ill too this years with Campylobacter and Salmonella , both a the same time so has been hammered with antibiotics. To cap it all off she also contracted Fox lungworm so is on medication again but it is easily treatable. The annoying thing is the vet said not to worry about lung worm as rare but we had her stools tested and it was found she had the buggers in her. My advice is test your dogs every 6 months ....I used a company called worm count ( on net )....£15 a pop to see if you dog has any worms and means you don't have to pump them full of advocate every month a yummy cocktail of nicotine and pesticide.

Really sad to hear about your dog. I had an awful experience the other night as went to a neighbour and there Dalmatian who was playing with my dog collapsed on the spot and died in our arms in a few minutes, 4 years old, no previous ailments, stunning looking dog but alas must have had either a cardiac event or brain event and there was nothing that could be done.

I have owned working terriers for thirty five years and all my dogs had good nose, a couple of times contradicting packs of fox hounds that had marked, not marked.

my present terrier is hopefully going to be used as a stalking dog as well as an odd time to ground. I have been taking her and she indicates well. However I have not shot anything on the occasions she has been with me. I have done several blood trails, left for up to four hours, and she managed. I will not let her follow up soon after a shot, as being a terrier can imagine bang - wild excitement in nano seconds when she puts two and two together.

i feel a terrier will find hidden animals, save time at dusk etc, however it will not be a dog for the next day like a
g w p or hound, as they are more for a hot scent.

working terriers are hard to get, however if you know any serious dog lads, they may part with a dog that does not make the grade below ground, that will be dog enough for your needs, while it can be assessed for calmness etc
st good luck with your choice & good sport

i use a jack russell cross for stalking.as i look after a lot off plantations she is a handy size to get over deer fences and has a good nose for tracking and finding deer.Picture 017.webp

My Missus is Czech and her Uncle has a wire haired pointer and a Border Terrier. He is stalking many years and swears by the border terrier. He always has him in the car when he goes out. They have very good working lines also as they prove them in man made tunnels with live badgers. Three levels of certificate I believe depending on what the terrier can/will do. Anyway.. Im sure you can get a good Border terrier here also... and it will find deer if that is what he is brought up on. My Yorkie can do 400m tracks!!!

The stalker was not called Roger by any chance,if its the same guy and the same terrier, the terrier would crawl on its belly when they were stalking into a beast, though it was shorter than the heather and unlikely to be seen by the deer, a truly amazing dog.
