The .410 – world’s smallest shotgun calibre

As you clearly state that a move away from lead is on a voluntary basis will BASC fight to maintain that state or support a legally binding lead ban when it comes?
Triggermortis
We support self-regulation. Same as for quarry species reviews.

I've just ordered some more lead.
From Hull this time.
Lovely lead.
I'm sick of being pushed around by prejudice towards me. And sick of governments robbing me.
Completely agree for shotguns, I’m happy to use non tox when it works as well as lead (which my 6-5 and 17hmr do - 243 sold) but I’ll pick ethical kill over marginal environmental impact

In Denmark they shot a lot of Roe with shotguns. Range is kept to 25m. They are shot on the shoulder with No4 shot from a 12bore. Shot doesn’t penetrate the skin, but the impact energy kills them.

i find this hard to believe , but i will do some research

Here you go. Apologies- not denmark, but sweden. In the video lots of discussion on using shotguns and they show a roe shot with a shotgun being skinned.

i used to take my little side by side 410 on a little shoot i used to be in , anyway a mate of mine with loads to say for himself was my neighbouring gun and was giving me loads of stick about my toy gun etc , then a hen bird went over him which he missed with both barrels of his manly grown up 12 bore so i had a poke at it behind him and folded it stone dead in the air first barrel he was a lot quieter about my toy for the rest of the day ! i know it was a lucky shot as do all the witnesses but boy did i strutt round with a grin for the rest of the day !

always beware small bore shotgun shooters as they likely can shoot......

@tackb , I was challenged by a "gentleman gun" on a shoot day for carrying,in his words,an "idiot stick".
Got great satisfaction on the very next drive by clearing up behind him, then showing him the two and a half inch 14 grams of seven and a half shot cartridges that I use. His face was priceless and the rest of the guns weren't slow in pulling his leg about it for the rest of the day.
Just because they can't do it some people believe no one else can either.

corrected that for you !

" The VOLUNTARY transition away from lead shot announced by NINE organisations in 2020 " is just like Labour taking away my winter fuel allowance. I do not like it, I did not ask for it, and you can not justify it, no matter how hard you try.

If the level of knowledge of the .410" (which other than the rimfire shotgun calibres is the most at risk regarding a banning of lead) is what has been shown by the Bill Harriman article I have now decided that I will not be asking my local MP to attend the BASC Presentation at the political conference it will be attending. What is not wanted being told to MPs is nonsense being said about the .410" cartridge's unsuitability to kill flying in a "humane" manner "for shooting moving, aerial targets".

Well said.

Mike Montgomery (Communications) BASC

Good morning, Mr XXX

Thank you for your message concerning Bill Harriman’s blog on the .410 shotgun.

As you are aware, Bill is a renowned authority on antique and modern firearms. As he cheerfully pointed out in his article, his opinions may not find favour with everyone, but they are just that – opinions based on his experience with the calibre.

Others, like you, will have profoundly different viewpoints but that surely provides an interesting stimulus for debate. The shooting community is a broad church and we at BASC feel that such debates should be welcomed and encouraged.

Kind regards

Mike
My message to BASC

The .410 – world’s smallest shotgun calibre

Normally I enjoy Bill’s articles such as his regular articles on historic guns in Shooting & Conservation. However his article on the 410 is way below his normal standards.
I have a Webley bolt action .410, but it is not made from machined-forgings, that’s possibly a typo by Bill?

Without a crystal ball it’s difficult to know what the 410 was designed for, but I can hit clays reliably with my Webley, if it doesn’t fit Bill, well that’s an individual matter.

As for ballistics or should we refer to pattern, it’s a simple matter to test a gun and would have added factual material to the article, as the Webleys are tightly choked.

Alas Bill has successfully courted controversy in his repeated statement on the 410’s inadequacies on flying game. I shot for 2 seasons beside an older gentleman who used a 410 O/U successfully, his cartridge to kill ration was better than mine. Was he an expert shot NO, but the modern Turkish 410s have interchangeable chokes and I suspect he was using appropriate chokes.

Perhaps there is agenda I aren’t aware of, but this type of inaccurate materials isn’t furthering BASC’s engagement with the shooting community, indeed the flak on Social Media is not constructive and for our critics this sort of material give them ammunition.

Yes but I don't want him speaking for us to the government thank you. If he is the expert they ask we are doomed.

PS. Won't make any difference but at least you all feel better you Muppets.

Maybe someone should have told Bill Harriman that Eley Fourlong do now come loaded with shot sizes other than English #5?
Maybe you should contact Bill yourself and stop the repeated silly sniping and fauxrage? It's been an interesting thread reading about forum members' various experiences of shooting with a .410.

Oh well. Never mind. Now's my turn.

And clearly from what he had written that experience is a great deal wider than Bill Harriman's. And no I will not now be suggesting to my MP that he visit your presentation at the Party Conference....that as a direct result of the first sentence of your response I've just quoted.
