The 6.5’s

Hello mate, yep, and another point as to using the 100 grn mono bullet in the 6,5 for deer instead of the 120s grns in lead, (which many people probably used to use for deer, when using a 6,5), is the speed bump.
Suddenly the 6.5s in cartridges, like the 6.5x55 or 6.5x57 or the creed, can shoot deer bullets at speeds previously achieved by the larger 30-06 derived cartridges, such as the 270 and 25-06. In turn those cartridges can almost push 100 grn bullets into magnum territory, speed wise. At least if you reload, or have the possibility of having someone reload for you.
So even for someone who believes in the speed kills principle, some of the smaller cartridges might these days do the sort of job that the 270 and 25-06 did. If that is what you want, of course.

why if i may ask? :)
Only reason is because I am shooting a lot of fallow deer on 100 acres plus fields and when shooting at 300-500 yards I just wanted a little more I loved the 30-06 and the 6.5 so I settled for some thing in the middle that’s fast flat and hits like a steam train and 140gr nosler BT @ 3400fps with reloader 22 sure as hell hits them hard !

Hello mate, that sounds sensible enough. :)

3400 fps with a 140 grn Nosler, wow! Which cartridge is that from, if I may ask ? :)

Folks I’m sure this has been covered a lot and I can’t get my head around it - probably because there’s nothing in it.

I’ve used the old man’s Swede,(I encouraged him to get one so I could dabble) and I like everything bar the trajectory to be honest. It doesn’t feel quite as ‘flat’ or ‘bang flop’ as my .270. It is slightly kinder on the shoulder,(not really a big deal unless shooting paper). It kills deer the same as the .270 though at the end of the day. I’ve maybe just got more confidence with the larger caliber.

I’ve been really tempted to change to a 6.5. Just for the sake of it really.

The PRC may go close to my .270 for performance.

The Swede does have about 11% more capacity than the CM home loaded I believe.

The CM is so popular it seems sensible. At what range does it start to max out on uk sized deer? Lest be honest, most deer are shot sub 200 yards but if you’ve a wounded deer going over the next hill, it’s nice to have enough legs.

Heart wants a PRC. Head says rebarrel .270 to a 6.5x55 and sense is probably the 6.5CM?
Hi.
I see you are a handloader. Have you considered a 6.5x284? I have one built on a Tikka 690 action. It shoots the Nosler Ballistic Tips at a respectable 3,000fs from a 24 inch barrel. Case capacity is similar to most 06 based cases.

Lapua and Norma make brass, and dies etc are readily available. Never seen factory ammo though if that may be an issue.

I really like mine and the 120 Nosler has killed Red and Fallow very well.

If you like to be a little different how about a 6.5-06 or the ackley version?
