The black dot of doom fun shoot - anyone game?

been out with the .308 and .243 several times but not yet had a shot
today took out the .17hmr for some squirrels instead
not used it for three months so fired three shots at the black dot
targets I had printed. from a high seat, first two in the spot,
then, like you do, pulled the last one.

Those are 1/2 inch groups

Those are definitely not 1/2" groups, if the dot is anywhere near a full inch.

The dot for the .243 is an exact inch. The circle for the .308 is about 1.2 inches.

Finally got round to this at the weekend
Had planned 5 calibres on one target but realised I had changed the scope on the 300WM it needed zeroing, turned out to be 12" low

so
.177 pcp air at 35yds, standing shots leaning on door frame into my garden at night

.22lr at 53 yds - quad sticks - annoyed as it is meant to be bang on at 50 and the first two shots went an inch higher than expected.
In anger I loosed off 5 to prove ...well ...something!

.222 at 97 yds - quad sticks - its zeroed an inch high ...which I reminded myself of after the first shot, then proceeded to aim too low and missed with both!

.270 at 97 yds - quad sticks - also zeroed an inch high, tried to walk one into the dot but failed!

if you are wondering why the target is full of shrapnel holes and covered in mud.......
that's what happened when I tried to zero the 300WM on the target just beside this one!!
The first 208gr round slammed into the bank 12" low spraying rock and mud all over both targets!
one lump of mud/rock almost blew the .22lr spot out!!

will return with the 300 freshly zeroed!!!

I'm going to give this a bit of a bump as I know some people can't get out and shoot at will etc. and they might want to give it a go with the improving weather. The thread has had a lot of reads but, as per last time, not a lot of shooting. I'm pleased to report that this time around some people did manage to put 3 shots into the dot and quite a few managed 2. It isn't an easy target so that is impressive in my view.

So far, my count gives us 71 shots fired and 24 hits on the black dot. As ever, and despite some great groups from people using other targets, I only counted shots fired at the black dot of doom target and I only counted "good" hits which were ones where I thought half or more of the bullet hole was in the black dot. I know the latter point is open to debate so I'm not saying that my count is definitive by any means but I'm considering that if the black dot was the spine of a deer then just creasing it might not be enough. Other methods of counting and including, or excluding, hits are at least as valid as mine but as I sort of suggested the objectives I'm trying to be seen to stick with them

Last time we did this I have a feeling that more people shot off sticks and that might have been a factor in the performance not being quite so good but, even so, my view is that those who shot prone this time shot better than those who shot prone last time. This time around we had 33.8% of shots fired hitting the dot while last time the success was 13.2%. When you consider all the variables that difference probably isn't as great as it seems but even so it is always nice to improve.

So, if you haven't already given it a try then print out the dot of doom target (link on the first page of the thread) and get out there with your rifle.

this is my attempt with my 204 Ruger at 150 paces, off the bonnet of my landrover. ( as in lamping conditions as its not a deer round) the scribble is roughly 15mm. gun was taken out of the cabinet ready for lamping tonight...

b. Custom Sporting Rifles
c. Long-Range Tactical Muntjac Rifles

Really? I'd say most people that have had a go have been using pretty standard factory stalking rifles.

a. Factory Sporting Rifles with scopes 8x or below
b. Factory sporting rifles with scopes 8.1x or above
c. Custom Sporting Rifles
d. Long-Range Tactical Muntjac Rifles

I’m cool about it really and just pining for British Sporting Rifle Club on the firing point banter as the well-rehearsed arguments as to what constitutes a Class ‘B’ stalking rifle rise to the surface as someone with a cheeky rifle posts another HPS!!

You'll have to forive my complete ignorance, but what is Class B? and HPS?

I think I understand the gist though - a cheeky rifle being one with a few bells and whistles that you wouldn't really expect on a working/field rifle?

Class B = A deer-legal rifle of a certain maximum all-in weight and non adjustable stock features.

HPS = Highest Possible Score. In the case of the BSRC so-called "StalkersTest" that is 100.

Personally I’ve never minded what rifle or calibre a competitor uses for this discipline as at the end of the day the person behind the fowling piece still has to coordinate trigger release with where they would like to think the crosshair is pointing! And yes, I have shot it with my 22 Hornet for non qualifying shear hell of it fun!

So here's mine with the new rifle firsts outing to day.

First 4 shots after rifle was run in ,shoots 21 to 24 at 100 yrds 1&2 are in same hole 3 less than .25 then god knows why 4 was a flyer !,maybe i was just over the moon the new rifle .

yes feller some times small holes on top of each other still awaiting load development with 130 hpbt hunting bullets but thats for another day ,but if it can deliver this from a factory can't wait for the perfected ammo to be sorted out.
