1st wander of 2026 this afternoon.
Started off by a member of the public flushing a nice driven cock pheasant for me .😀

Then I was in search of squirrels but managed a nice right and left on roosters.

A few more squirrels and woodies and ended on a nice high driven Jay.

Last week dragging that buck out I fell backwards on my Winchester so this morning I wanted to check it's zero.
So at dawn I was out but loaded with the small game load I use for, yep, that's right, small game.
Lots of cock pheasants here so I thought what the heck.
Then just as I was admiring the peace a bloody fox barked from cover not 100yds away!
Then the fun started but to save you the boring details I missed the fox.....I don't know how to put this so I'll whisper it....three times!
Shot one it turns out stripped hair when I looked later, 35yds, sticks in the way 🤷.
Shot two, in the field trotting right to left, 30yds, nope.
Third shot going away, 150yds plus, wind left to right, didn't allow, bullet passed Charlie's right side and that was that, a miserable and confused affair 🤦
Convinced the rifle now must be surely off I then went and shot a pheasant through the neck, offhand at 35yds or so! So the swearing and muttering started all over again.

With that I was out of small game rounds so I adjusted the scope for full on loads and went to an old oil drum I found recently with a handy 22 bullet hole in it. Made the site safe, paced off 100 large strides, paused, cocked the hammer, took a deep breath, waited for the wobble to stop and bang. The result was my bullet going into the same hole!IMG_20260117_111228550.webp
Now why couldn't I of done that on charlie FFS.
Well at least the rifle took the fall well. I'm happy for that.
