The out yesterday or today thread and...

Out today for the first in anger for a while - rain threatening but needs must.
Off to little oak wood where greys abound, armed with .17hmr and Pulsar thermal - damned place was hopping with the buggers but so much ivy it was nigh on impossible to get a shot; good fun though spotting them with the thermal flitting through the greenery; wish I had brought the semi-auto 12 bore!
So crossed the lane into the marshy bit and first scan revealed something very large and damned close! Lowered the thermal expecting as often is the case not to be able to see anything through the ground cover and there 25 feet away was a very red, very fox-shaped blob; up with the sticks, on with the Pard 008P and there was a fox curled up fast asleep. Steadied myself on the sticks, gave a tiny squeak and the ears popped up, followed very quickly by the head. Cross hairs centred on the noggin, gentle squeeze of the trigger and……. off it ran! Bugger!

Consolation was a grey monster asleep in the crook of a large tree, perfectly centred in the thick trunk so a great backstop for the wee rifle - 80 yards or so and two rounds later it decided it really was dead and fell into a large puddle.

Not the biggest bag ever but just great to get out and even better it didn’t rain until I was in the jeep!

I'd sware that fox got hit FB. Might be worth getting the dog.

I thought so too Smelly and had a good look around but no hair or blood within a 10 yards circle sweep. Going back tonite as hens being taken - which was the reason I tried it in the first place. TBH I thought a hit in that area with the wee .17 at that distance would have been lights out as has been the case on three others but…
Don’t understand why the file didn’t download to my ipad when the squirrel one did though.

I can't believe that squirrel wasn't inside out after first one let alone turning around to see what had stung him!! 😆

At that distance it may be shooting low.

#16.
I went to get some squirrels for bate this morning. I actually had a lie in for once!
Anyway I got a squirrel but later noticed a large heat source in a distant wood. Hmm. I didn't see it move off but it did disappear.
Any way I headed that way anyway and sure enough the pheasants started complaining.
They dutifully told me it's direction.
It was following the tree line to the opposite side of the field I just entered now on higher ground than what ever it was I had spotted.
The pheasant were all on high alert and then I spotted it. Messing around some old earth works in the far corner.
Using the topography I advanced hidden donning face mask, as I right this a big male gos has just swooped in!
I crest a brow and there he is at an estimated 200yds. I set the tripod and level the tiny 17hmr. Wind nearly on my face I aim just above the shoulder. He is looking my way intently now.
At the shot he leaps in the air legs stretched out. Heart I muttered. He also loses the far leg.
He made cover but I found him. I think he was dead but hegot a second one just in case. Then Jess was released.
The wee bullet passed through breaking the far leg. Classic heart shot.
Those little bullets are amazing!

The firing point was just above my game bag on the brow of the field.

That's amazing SD , personally I wouldn't dream of shooting at a fox at 200 yds with the HMR but well done you got the result.

I need to practice some longer range shots with mine this Summer , furthest shot to date is 162 yds on a hare.

Thats a fair shot mate and well done. Nasty little round 👍

I threatened it FB! They see that 222 and yield immediately!!
Yep - such is the omnipotence of God’s own chambering…
I kinda thought that what was shown of the ex-squirrel was actually all that was left of said beastie - my Vmax include scattering of the remains to the four winds…
