THE PRETEND KEEPER

I’m right handed, can only close my right eye on its own, if I try to close just my left, both close, I can’t even mount a gun properly right handed so shoot left, I’m spot on with a rifle but give me a shotgun and it could be pointing anywhere 😂🤪
How strange - funny old world…..

Whoooo, everything finished today and ready for my birds, I had a little helper today and fair play to him he got stuck in, cleaning the feeders and I showed him how to check the fences, me, him and his dad are now back up here looking for the gingers and to be honest he’s doing my head in, not really a job for a hyper active 8 year old 😂IMG_7880.webpIMG_7883.webpIMG_7885.webpIMG_7886.webpIMG_7887.webp

Your the first person to notice that, he has a problem with his right eye so looks through the scope with his left, he doesn’t miss much so it obviously works for him, he also shoots shotgun left handed, very strange 😂

I'm ambidextrous (I write with my left) (I do sports with my right) I cut with my right but I paint with my left... weird isnt it?
I'm incredibly blind In my left eye but took to shooting right handed incredibly easy so that was lovely (I had zero desire to shoot left handed, soon as I held my first rifle)

I feel for the leftie hands, leftie eyes that are blind or vice versa I've tried cutting meat with my left hand I end up with the most uneven chunks possible since I cant see it.

So we started our evening over the far side of the shoot, the piggeries drives, not long after getting set up a small group of fallow came out from the tree line 4 doe’s and 2 pricketts, not having the time to deal with a deer, we let them be, still a lovely thing for the lad to see, now we spent a good hour here trying all the usual calls and as we lost the light we hadn’t seen anything so I decided to move to the bottom of the field at the back of the farm, by this time we had lost the light, so we set up alongside a bale in the middle of the field with our backs to the wood, with in 5 minutes a fox had appeared to our right, winded us and disappeared into the wood, caller on and it was less than 5 minutes and I spotted another almost at the top of the field near the farm, but it was slowly making its way down the field, mousing as it went. It would sometimes disappear for a few minutes behind a bale, not showing any interest in the caller that was approximately 45 yards from us, it was a good 30 minutes before it turned onto the rat death call and ran towards the caller, I had to stop it with a whistle before it reached the caller, lights out for this chap, explaining to the lad the we now wait to see if there’s more than one it was less than 5 minutes before another presented half way up the field along my oak wood drive, again, showing interest in the rat call but would not commit and stayed out at a good 90 yards, giving the opportunity by sitting and looking in the direction of the caller down it went, the first was a dog ( cub ) and the second was a vixen, I’m pretty sure they are from the same litter, hopefully there’ll be a few more over the coming week as the birds are here on Thursday

Some might think that an 8 year old lad shouldn’t be out doing what we are doing at the time we are doing it, but I would say, stick it up your pipe, that lad has learned more spending the day with me and coming out this evening than any kid sat in front of a screen, we have watched deer and hares, listened to owls and found owl pellets on top of the bales, looked at the stars and even seen a couple of shooting stars which he had never seen before and was amazed by them IMG_7889.webpIMG_7890.webpIMG_7895.webp

Yeah, good chance of meteor showers last night AND tonight if skies are clear..

your apprentice is coming on grand stav , and has a great teacher
atb mate
He’s a good lad, not like most kids, always wants to be out with us and has no interest in computer games and the other nonsense kids like, I’m hoping that in time he’ll find himself a mate who’s parents allow them to come out with us as well so he has someone his own age to share his experiences with

Everything looks good! My only observation is that the dusting shelter looked a little on the low side, but if the birds use it, then it's fine! Mine were always about hip high so the sun could get in and there was plenty of air circulation.

I’ve always done them this height as they are the same as my mates on the commercial, the reason is they are only for the poults that use them and as they grow I don’t want them in the pen’s because they are breeding grounds for disease, I have a few others around the shoot that are about 750 high and they are ideal for the adult birds 👍
