Thermal clip on

Afternoon all, after a piece of help as most places don’t have demonstration Thermal clip on units. I am after fitting one on my Swarovski 6-18 x 50 but reading all the reviews it seems like the base magnification of 6 may be to high. Does anyone have any experience of running these with 6 x mag? Seems a hassle to have to change the scope as well as buying the Thermal. Thanks in advance Brian

You may just get away with 6 mag but anything more and the image will be too grainy. You would be better with a 3 to 12 of course. I think you would need to pretty confident about your target.

Mate fitted one to a 4 mag base scope he lost a lot off field off view and also couldn’t use the menus to adjust anything as it was to zoomed in .

I changed my Zeiss to a Minox 3-15x56 which the Pard 007 works perfectly on.
Every bit as good a scope as the Zeiss Duralyt if not better.

To get the full screen on the Pulsar Krypton you might get away with a 3x and certainly with a 2x like my Z8i 2-16x50.
I may sell my Krypton now as am finding the Alpex very good, so pm me if you want pics of it. It comes with the slim fitting Smartclip adaptor for 50obj Swaro (56mm outer bell diameter).

I've just ordered the zeiss thermal add on. Tried on my 3-12x56 Ht was very clear up to 6-8 mag then started to get more grainy but field of view also become very narrow. To be fair targets at 6-8 mag out to 150m wouldn't be an issue and so much more enjoyable looking at a proper reticle and not a digital one

I had a Pulsar thermal front add-on fitted to my 5-30x50 Z6i
Even at x5 the field of view was narrow and above x8 it was pretty much unusable
I've had on NV front add-on and two thermal front add-ons and have now reached the (expensive) conclusion that front add-ons are a PITA and simply not worth the money or the bother.
The idea is good and they sound great, but they simply do not deliver what people expect of them

Cheers

I tried to set up a pulsar proton for a friend and it wouldn’t work with anything more than 3x mag….

Thought that with the Proton I’m looking at the Pulsar DTC which is 1024x768 screen display where as the Proton is
Once you get the hang of them and set them up properly and repeat the same setup each time they are fine , I've had the Core , Currently the Krypton ( also have thermions) and they have been good
good to know I’m thinking Pulsar DTC but looking like I’ll have swap out the 6-18 Swarovski on the rifle first.

What is the Pulsar DTC?
Pulsar make two thermal front add-ons
The Proton FXQ and the Krypton FXG
I haven't used the Proton - a front add-on based on a fixed focus 30mm lens and 17 micron 384 sensor is about as much use as a chocolate teapot
I have owned, used and sold on a Krypton FXG50.
The Krypton on Swaro 5-30x50 Z6i was not an enjoyable experience
I also used the Krypton with a 2.5-15x50 Athlon Midas scope and it was noticeably better down at x3 than at x5
Scope glass quality is not an issue with front add-ons - cheap glass works just as well as expensive glass because the scope is only looking at the display on the rear of the add-on
The other issue is that the Krypton is big, bulky and very heavy.
When fitted, it significantly degrades the balance and handling of the rifle.

Never found it heavy or bulky , and luckily don't really do a lot of freehand shooting and doubt many others do either so the sticks , bipod or Rucksack make this not a problem ?

The beauty is being able to use your day scope up until a certain point and then put it on and carry on ! I also carry a Pulsar Forward as well so if conditions get too bad for thermal could take off the Krypton and swap straight to NV , what other setup could I do that with in a small Rucksack

Having owned a Krypton all I can add to what’s already been said is think carefully before buying. Frankly it’s not worth the money. Poor image when zoomed in at 6x or more, heavy and I had POI shift even after calibration. Great in theory poor in practice.

i have the hik thunder, its the pro model so can be used as a spotter, scope and a clip on.

spotter and scope is fantastic no issues at all.

clip on, is great, its not a long range unit but for the type of shooting i do and how often i use it as a clip on it does the job perfectly well. like others have said keep the mag as low as you can & understand you will loose FOV and some clarity compared to a traditional scope.

i got this for the flexibility as sometimes i just need a spotter (deer stalking) and if i decide to stay out later after a fox i can simply just clip the thermal on and away i go.

it works for me!

best advice would be to try one and see if it suits your style of shooting.
