i cannot say i am overly saddened by someone who hunted lions, leopards and elephant. Anyone killing such magnificent beasts in pursuit of trophies or profit gets little sympathy from me.

Then you fail to understand the principles of game animal management then as they are the same the world over irrespective of whether it be elephant or roebuck .Your user name speaks volumes

Actually, i probably understand a good deal more than you might think. i am South African, grew up 30 miles east of the Kruger National Park and have been hunting for 30+ years. Please don't expose your own ignorance by focusing on something as unrelated as my username. What i have expressed is an opinion - it seems that many on this forum fail to understand that we are entitled to have different ones to what you may have. It doesn't make me ignorant of anything - nor does it mean that i fail to understand anything. You have your view, i have mine.

Yes, largely because hunting with hounds in Africa is for the purposes of hunting predators, which i do not view as an acceptable quarry. There is no purpose achieved in hunting big cats in Africa but to stroke the ego. It's not about 'animal management' as some here seek to point out - their numbers do not warrant 'management', and you can't eat them. It's about trophies and profit.
In the end, hunting with hounds in Africa comes down to being the equivalent of a 'canned' hunt when the tree'd beast is shot. i think that is the reason why it's largely viewed as abhorrent. Here in the UK, i have no objection to fox hunting with hounds for instance - it is a fundamentally different proposition.

Don't know about that one. Pretty to hard to see in elephant thorns. If the animals are down wind and have approached from another angle then the animals will smell you before you see or hear them. I certainly didn't like wandering around near Kruger looking for my golf balls armed with a driver. Would have much preferred a 3 iron.

You're welcome to your opinion - but there's a time and a place for everything. A man lost his life, a wife lost her husband and five children lost their father. I think a modicum of sadness ought to be the order of the day.

troll...if you don't have anything nice to say on a HUNTING FORUM ABOUT HUNTING, rather keep it for yourself! This is how nature conservation tries to manage their game populations either through hunters and yes and / or poachers...Hunters will be done on a legal, quota managed figure per year and poachers none...what do yo have to say about this? It is because of these hunters (pro and trophy) that these game parks are still in operation.
You are from RSA and live next to the Kruger Park...what 20 years back...it is chaos there now sir!!

I just thought the story sounded a little weird...this isn't Africa in the early 1900s, these guys are pros and should know the lay of the land pretty well, pretty much where every elephant is...just wondering if someone was careless...like coming between cow and calf

People still get killed by game in Africa. You're a bit naïve if you think that it's possible to be totally safe in the bush and to know where every elephant is!
