Has anyone got any innovative/ simple ideas to do with a fox….
Skull prep,
Fur tanning,
Taxidermy,
Tail on a hat etc…
Pics and instructions welcome.

How do you remove this, tried several times with string & cut round tail root, ended up pulling tail completely off.

I just ring the tail down to the bone, don't cut between vertebrae, then split a stick the way you would make a tealer for a snare. Tail into split, pinch the stick tight and work the brush off. Once it starts moving it generally comes clean off. Put the "handle" in immediately, whilst brush still wet, slides on easily.

I don’t mess with them.
Smelly suckers, even the crows and buzzards won’t eat them.
They dont half make the dog stink when she rolls on it a few weeks later.

Unpleasant job is skinning foxes , earnt more than a few quid as an apprentice in my teens getting bounty and sending skins to a guy in Birmingham if i remember correctly . Big bonfire if i have to remove them now if i dont bury them on location .

I remove tails by running knife around the base of tail taking care not to cut into the meat and just making sure the skin is cut. Then grab or cut 2 x 1" tick sticks. The sticks go around where the cut was made. Stand on the back legs and then clamping the sticks together with enough pressure to pull the skin and not the entire off you can pull the tail fur off laving the bone attached to the fox.

here a link for what i mean:

For tanning i pickle the tail in meths for a month. Then wash shampoo conditioner and blow dry. In order to prevent the skin from cracking i drip some baby oil in to the end opening and every few days give it a massage and stretch so it doesn't crack.
