Ticks

Hello all
This has been covered a few times.
Just wondering what you guys are using for your dog on ticks? Multiple ticks daily on the GWP eyes, ears you name it. Lost my daughter’s cat earlier in the year, vet had said the multiple tick bites had compromised its immune system. Never had ticks here only started in the last 7 or 8 years, not a fan of chemicals but I’ll need to give her something. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

We wash with flea and tick shampoo and that seams to cover ours, but it sounds like you have an area where they are more prevalent. The spot-ons or tablets may be the way to go.

Bravecto 3 month duration covers the biggest period. Any of the products that have a drug ending in "-laner" will do though. Surest collars reputed to be good too. Frontpro is available without a vet prescription.

Bravecto chewable, make sure you get right size for dogs bodyweight. Mine used to pick up 20 to 50 each trip to Cartmel but none since having tablet. Area I now stalk doesn't have anywhere near the same tick burden but I still treat them just in case.
Always treat my clothes with a permethrin coating at beginning of season and not had any in me since doing that.

That's a good point, we do the same every year (can't recall the name) and it's saved my legs when we are out in long grass or the wood with the dogs.

Yea,,we do the same, I’m not picking up ticks as much, just the dog???

You can usually find a treatment on amaz0n for insects as long as it contains permethrin. Mix a solution with water and spray on clothes on washing line outside. It is harmful to aquatics and to humans when wet but once it's dried it is fine. It can last through a few washes so it'll last a good while.

Animology - you get from most pet shops (also sells the fox poo one!). But our dogs get washed every week as one has a love of a wet cow pat and and the other for the boggy mud when they go for a swim.

We swear by this stuff for our four dogs, especially for the "Low riders" ( Teckels )

Check your dog frequently , remove ticks soon as you can . Also check yourself , to remove use a tick fork . I have had a tick born infection that put me in Hospital a fortnight but no way am i going to dose my dogs with drugs as frequently as we might need !

Have gone for online subscription service called Itch which sends you spot on tick and flea and chewable wormer per schedule and adjusted for the weight you tell them

I've written on here before about an epileptic fit our healthy Vizsla had that I attribute to using Bravecto - the literature search on that throws up a staggering amount of side effects with that family of tick treatments. Thankfully, the Vizslas seldom have any and we are only finding the odd one or two on the Teckel so I continue not to dose.

I really dislike this site. Their algorithms always sell you stuff and it's usually fipronil, which doesn't work that well, one product sells methoprene, which is marginally better.

I have stopped using seriously toxic chemicals on my dogs having lost the last two to cancer at fairly young ages (no clue if it is related.)
These days I slightly dilute "Dr Bronners" Lavender scented liquid soap and wipe it over my dog and my own exposed skin and trouser legs before I go into the woods in tick season. Careful check later reveals occasional tick moving about but very rarely one embedded.

Lets be fair , I aint putting chemicals all over my dogs as i am not going to put any on my skin either . I say this after i got absolutely hammered by ticks on one trip that put me in in hospital a week or so .
My Wife and youngest cleaned the dog's Ticks , while i was in the hospital.

I've had my 3-year-old Lab on Bravecto since a pup and had no problems, well apart from getting him to swallow it. Mentioned this to the vet last week, and he offered the Bravecto in injection form. Lasts a year.
