Hi there folks, I’ve just put a variation in to get a 223 after a few years without one….. my question is…. I’m looking at using the Hornady 35 grain factory ammo and was just wondering if anyone has managed to get these to stabilise in a 1:8 twist tikka varmint barrel? or is the projectile just too light and require a 1:12 ? Any help much appreciated 👍🏻

late answer i know and i have never fired a 35gr bullet through my rifle but have used a lot of 40gr v-max/40gr varmeggedon if kept below 3000fps they are fine from my tikka tac a1 20" 1in 8 twist. above 3100 fps they turn to dust around 100 yards !

My 1:8 will.only shoot 60 grn or above. Just shoot 69 TMK zero at 200 yds and off you go.

My 1:8" Tikka T3x will shoot 40gn VMAX all day long into one ragged hole at 100M, and that's at 3650ft/sec They don't explode during flight. Norma N200 powder.

Never tried the 35gn.

When I had it years ago my reminton 1in9 wouldnt shoot anything lighter than 60gr it was a very accurate rifle but it alway niggled at me that this was the case

.223 Remington twist rates determine optimal bullet weight stabilization, with
faster twists (1:7–1:8) for heavy bullets (69–80+ gr) and slower twists (1:12–1:14) for light bullets (40–55 gr). A 1:9 twist is versatile for 50–62 gr, while 1:8 is ideal for modern, heavy, lead-free, and long-range options.

I got the 1:8 to get ahead of the lead ban; then 22 cal centrefire was exempt I believe 🫠

Anyways, the foxes I’ve shot 53gr v-max (Hornady superformance) at don’t seem to notice the difference.

Did you check Hornady's own product data before posting this query - sku=83266 - 4000 fps - 1:7" twist barrel? :)

Same here bought my Tikka T3X with a 1:8 twist in anticipation of the lead ban but as you say .223 is exempt (currently). But no worries it shoots 60 grn VMax into clover leafs and as someone else said the foxes don’t notice the difference.

Most accurate factory in my T3x Super Varmint 1:8 twist are Federal 53 gn V-Max, with 55 gn RWS Teilmantel close behind both around the 0.5 MOA mark. ADI 69gn SMK's are around 0.75 MOA. Never felt the need for lighter faster bullets than these.
