Tikka M590 misfire

so I am after a bit of advice regarding the above title

I was out today, trying to zero my Tikka M590 in 308
Using 150 Grain PPU soft point ammo
I have had probably 4 misfires out of two separate boxes of ammo. I only shot around eight rounds in total as the misfires were happening. The misfired rounds have gone off but only after being re chambered.

Some of the primes only have small indentations on them

I am thinking more towards this being a firing pin issue, but would just like some advice if it is not this what else could it be?

The rifle is new to me and looks in decent shape. This was the first time using it. The seller was selling the rifle with a batch of Home loads made up of which I declined so I haven’t tested any other ammo. Maybe the primers he’s loading with are softer than the factory PPU?

I understand PPU ammo isn’t the best, but it shouldn’t misfire?

Any advice welcome cheers

Could be the ammo, try different make or reload them and see how the different primers perform.
Could be a weak firing pin spring, Is it easy to lift the bolt handle from a fired/bolt decocked state with an empty chamber?
Decock the bolt out of the rifle and measure how much the firing pin protrudes from the bolt face and does the pin look pitted/broken?

The pin comes out around 3mm I’d say and it’s not broken or pitted

I wouldn’t say the bolt was any easier than any of my other rifles feels the same I’d say.

This is the thing… nothing looks out of the ordinary regarding the bolt

But the primers in the ammo that fired first time only have a small indentation

Strip the fire control mech

Clean thoroughly

Re apply correct line to the spring sparingly

The smallest amount of debris can prevent the pin going forward properly and cause misfire

I have striped the bolt ie

Taken the shroud off and handle off
Lots of grease and oil in there

Will the pin come away from the spring if so how is this done

Cheers

Do a search of how to strip T3/ 595 etc bolt

Simple to do providing the bolt isn’t corroded to the fire control mech

I would strip the bolt and clean off any old oil and grease as it will attract dirt and debris, then try either a different brand or batch of ammunition through it. Bad factory ammo does crop up on occasion. I’ve had 18 out of 20 Hornady Superformance misfire not long ago.

There’s your problem.

My landowner had the same problem last year, I stripped & cleaned the bolt as below & it’s not missed a beat since.

Don’t attempt to remove the spring from the pin, it is held on by an interference fit collar which is single use.

Give the firing pin & spring a soak in some solvent, clean it with an old tooth brush, give it a blast of brake cleaner & leave to dry. I wouldn’t put any oil on it personally as this will just attract dirt & dust & gum it up.

Then give the inside of the bolt a damned good clean using solvent & a small nylon bore brush to loosen any crappite that’s in there. Then give it a blast with brake cleaner & allow to dry. I wouldn’t oil the inside of the bolt either for the same reason as above.

Reassemble the bolt & put a small amount of suitable grease on the cam that the firing pin runs along.

This should solve your problem, if it doesn’t then buy a new firing pin, it’s the same one as used in the M595.

thanks for that

The shroud is gunked up the pin and spring itself didn’t look that bad. The inside of the bolt has a coating of oil and shiiiiite on it tha. Needs cleaning

What would you recommend to soak it in?

I think I’ve got some carb cleaner in the garage

This’ll work fine - you can pick up a large aerosol can of it from Toolstation or screwfix etc.

If you don’t have a suitable nylon bore brush then get yourself a small bottle brush from a kitchen store.

If the bolt shroud (& presumably the back of the bolt?) is gunked up, what is the trigger like? - it should be clean & not full of heavy oil/grease.

The cam I mentioned in my previous post is the one the pen is pointing to in the pic below - it’s what pulls the firing pin back as you lift the bolt handle 👍

So I finally got round to zeroing the rifle again yesterday.

Taking your advice I striped the bolt completely cleaning it inside and the spring with a toothbrush and some brake cleaner. To the eye it didn’t look that bad anyway I cleaned it off and put it back together.

Took the rifle out yesterday after getting some different ammo fired three sako rounds all shot perfectly so I tried the PPU from last time and that shot as well

All had strikes in the primer that were a lot more prominent than last time

Thanks for all your advice problem sorted
