Took a punt on a new ATA Turqua Synthetic Adjustable 20" in 6.5 Creedmoor

£580 all in including both RFD fees, from Sportsman's Gun Centre. They give you good discounts if you ask,

Reviews have been rather favourable, from 2 people I trust, Chris and Pete Moore. Chris's review is linked below, Pete's you can find on his YouTube channel.

I shall let you know how I go on, and whether this is a Diamond in the rough ... or a dog poo on the carpet. My feedback will be honest, even if it's to my own detriment.

Arrives on Wednesday.

Snapcaps.

I like that it has an adj stock, comes with spacers and a 5 and 3 shot mag. Nice touches.

Thread (from SGC who are the importers) is 15x1

They are not expensive, but I expect they will work pretty well and kill plenty of deer. In exactly the same way the ATA shotguns just work.

I think these will be the sort of rifle that new, young stalkers may well gravitate towards, as well as those such as farmers, conservationists, foresters and gamekeepers who just need a rifle as one of the tools of the trade.

Not in the UK perhaps, but in other countries where hunting on public lands is just part of life with many taking one or two beasts a year for the freezer, these sorts of rifles do very well.

They may not shoot quite as well, have as long as barrel life etc as much more expensive rifles, but most rifles only shoot a few rounds a year. For those that shoot a lot, they may wear out / break quicker than say a Sako or Tikka, but then they are half or a third of the price.

Wise words Heym. Yes, I will be using mine to test for a few rounds, zero at 100y, test drop at 200 / 300 yards, and then for deer - so I would envisage not a huge amount of use - especially with the cost of decent centerfire ammo these days. It will not be a high volume foxing gun or a range gun.

Rifle has arrived

Initial impressions.

Lots of factory grease on and in it, had to take it apart to clean it. Not a bad things rather have it overgreased and protected than bare.

Stock is very rigid. Adjustable comb mechanism stiff but very solid.

Bolt is smooth and the 60degree lift is great. Bolt is LONG, feels like the throw of a 30-06 in a 6.5CM. Bolt blueing on the contact points already starting to go and I've only cycled the bolt 20 off times and not even shot it yet. Not a major issue as this is a VERY budget gun.

Included pic rail is steel and extremely solid.

Threads perfectly cut and thread protector screws on and off no issue.

Stock bolts come with steel pillars, very impressed. Torque is achieved as basically you hit the torque and can't go any further because you can't compress the steel pillars. Excellent design.

3 and 5 round mags are quality polymer. Shame there single stack and not double but on well.

The bright red tactile stick out cocking indicator is very useful. The three position safety switch works flawlessly.

Trigger is 2 stage. It's not world class but it's not bloody bad. Very acceptable. Could probably improve it with fettling but from the box it's a crisp 2 stage with a decent travel and pull weight.

Came with 2 extra spacers, fitted both in 5 mins as I need a long LOP (I'm 6"4)

First impressions are, it's not a Sako or a Blaser, but for £570 brand new - you get a lot of gun for your money. 3 year warranty included, neither here nor there really.

Once I get a Moderator fitted and decide on an optic I'll put some rounds through it and come back with more feedback.

Have fitted a scope/mounts to the rifle now. The attached Steel rail that comes with the rifle is excellent. Its now boresited at 25 yards.

I have also attached a bipod - with the included/attached steel sling studs firmly attached and quality items.

The rifle also came with Steel QD sling swivels in the box - a nice touch (these can cost £30 for a set to buy separately, I really think this is a neat touch that they are included with the rifle)

Still trying to find a moderator for the rifle. I will likely zero it this week without a mod attached just so I can put the first rounds through the rifle.

I'll report back on my further opinions/findings once I've put those first 5-10 shots through it.

I bought a franchi horizon a few years ago for a few hundred more than an ATA as an affordable way to get into it. I wish there was something like the ATA available when I purchased mine! Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it!

I looked at the Franchi, but I didn't like the position of the safety catch inside the trigger guard. Not knocking the rifle, but Personally i felt it was a feature I didn't like.

Saftey on mine is Remington 700 style, the mag release is in the trigger guard (not sure if mixed this up?) but I agree, I don't like the mag release in the trigger guard, had to make sure I told the RCO on my DSC that when I was removing my mag I wasn't unintentionally messing with the trigger. The stock is also quite flexible which has given me some intermittent barrel contact issues. I'd like to swap it for something else but I have a 6.5cm slot waiting to be filled which will take priority over changing the 243 at the moment :( maybe an old Sako might crop up and I can swap it in

If you get it out the stock and give the action/bolt/trigger a good look over, you’ll see it’s basically a miniature AI. The more you look the more you see how they essentially copied it and scaled it down 🤣. The 2 stage-ish trigger can be made better but not great. To get the trigger fairly decent it means the safety doesn’t engage. The safety system is not great, be very cautious if you do a full trigger job. In the US, Savage re-brand it as the 334.

A miniature Accuracy International?

I won't be fettling the trigger, it's fine as it is for what I need it for.
