So, I bought a Jimny about a year ago after being persuaded to do by the SD community; I've not regretted a it for a second!

I now need to replace the road tyres it came with and I'm looking for some suitable A/T tyres as I have to drive a significant distance to all of my stalking areas so, 'Muds' are not an option.

I had Yokohama Geolandars on my old truck and they were great for the long journeys but I never really got round to putting them fully to the test in mud.

So...... I'm looking for your thoughts on which A/T tyres to go for. Bear in mind I'll be driving over 150 miles at a time so don't want something too aggressive but am keen to maximise off road ability.... if such a tyre exists 😄
 
BF Goodrich MT's were quiet enough on my Jimny for 90 mile trips to my leases, at up to 70mph, which I did quite often. You just need to rotate them from time to time to make sure they wear evenly which keeps noise down.

Fantastic tyres for me. I don't think that the road noise is that much more than the BFG AT's on my previous car. I've got about 25k miles on the MT's now in 2 years and they're maybe half worn. Fairly grippy on the tar too in the wet and cold/snow.

Are you sure the road noise isn't just being drowned out by the engine screaming at 4000rpm?! 😄

Use these in the winter and a road tyre on the d-max in the summer, lots of rims abt for a swap over set.
Cheap summer set as no point in scrubbing good tread away on the tarmac.
 
I run exclusively on BFG muds

I’d not entertain ATs for off road use on the farm or stalking

As mine is in for a rebuild at KAP Suzuki I did look at the big low pressure tyre option but was persuaded against them as they apparently are not at all suited to road work

All tyres are a compromise, but for me, muds on the road are not so much a compromise as ATs in mud

I think that's what my daughter has got on her Jimny. They seem pretty good for all-round use.

As I said my way around is 2 sets the road tires the D-Max came with and the Worm/Drives on spare rims.
The swap over takes no time also I grease the U-J's on the props and the sliders (twice a year) while I have it up in the air.

I would put good money that most 4x4 owners have don't have a grease gun let alone where to point it :coat:
 
How muddy do you want them? I have a GV1600 which is a touch bigger but essentially the little Suzuki's are good off road due to their minimal weight. You do not need the same level of grip that heavy trucks do as the Suzukis float across the land more than heavier trucks.

AT tyres like Toyo Open Country A/T Plus and Falken Wildpeak AT3's punch well above their weight and are very affordable for what they are. Decent on road in terms of noise and fuel usage but surprisingly good off road unless you are really driving through soup. I don't push mine to be honest but my mate takes his GV places you would not think he would get it out. He has a winch etc which we joke has literally never been used. I just go up rutted paths and over fields but as soon as it gets really wet/boggy, I go on foot as the damage is too much to the fields.

£75 a corner incl VAT from Demon Tweeks for the Toyo and £80 a corner for the Falkens.

I sub contract to a agricultural firm and the amount of dry torn worn out bearing that come through the door with a perfectly intact grease nipple is quite funny...

Around here the vine yards are on the increase and that kit is getting a beating from the Essex clay so are the bearings, good for work as often the kit is imported so a re work in under a week is far better that waiting for Italy to come of holiday lol

I’m in much the same position with my GV1600…. I fitted a full set of Limulus Event 4x4 a few years ago and they’ve been pretty good off road and wear-wise….can’t remember being stuck stuck needing a pull.

Road speed isn’t a consideration for me as I average 45mph, 60mph is a rarity…..wet grip is fine too.

History-wise… this is my 4th Vit/GVit preceded by 3 410’s, I’ve only ever had 1 set of mudpluggers on a spare set of wheels for one of the SJ’s…but they were a luxury, even on 3/4 worn A/T’s the SJ would scoot past struggling LR’s, RR’s and Discos 🤣

They are comedy little vehicles aren't they?. Like you it is rare mine sees north of 50mph on the roads as I only drive it locally and that is all very rural back roads.

When my daily driver car is in for service or is off the road for a few days, I end up taking "Bert" on the proper roads. You can see queues behind me for miles ha ha ha. Always makes chuckle. It is rare to plod along in the little GV without a grin on your face. They are smiley little vehicles that never let you down.

I should probably not have said that as it is MOT time end of October. Think it needed a new caliper last year and that was it. Easy to get underneath without axel stands to do the oil and filter which saves me a few quid each year. Probably only do about 4k a year in mine but I treat it to new blood and filters and am far more attached to it than my daily driver. Great little trucks.
 
I average about 5k a year and it went (sailed) through its annual service and MOT at 109k last week, I’d had advisory’s on wear in the lower front suspension arms ball joints previously so got those changed at the same time …. we reckoned they wouldn’t pass this year and it’s certainly felt a lot more precise since.

Had a brake caliper and the pads changed last year but I’d salvaged the recent ones from its predecessor, the clutch was changed 2 years ago….all in all it‘s not cost me a lot to run since buying in 2016 …apart from the road tax! 😫

Great motors…. I’ll be struggling to find a replacement when it finally goes, with the side opening rear door I can (and often do) stand on the rear bumper or a rear wheel at times and shoot off the roof. Two foxes on Sunday night in fact.…one on the wheel. 😎

VED is a bit excessive for them. I always wince when that time comes round but it is what it is.

Out of interest, do you find that you suffer from an unholy amount of wasps and flies and stuff like that coming in the windows whilst they are open in the summer. I have never had a vehicle that suffers so much from this. It could be because it moves along at glacial speeds which offers the jaspers an easy chance of entry or maybe it creates some sort of vortex that sucks them in. The only other thing which annoys me is puddles which basically cover the windscreen in water. Always ready on the wipers as a puddle approaches.
 
Just put a pair of Geolanders AT3 GO15 on the front of my GV. Rears are Events 698+ sadly it appears they are now unavailable. V good tyre. The Falken Wildpeaks seem to be a similar tyre so may try a pair on the back when the Events die.
