A third class dog is better than a 1st class human when it comes to tracking deer

It is not a hard task for a dog to find a shot deer. The longer the runner time wise i agree anything hound based should be better.
A steady dog with good temperament would always be my choice.
You carry on with your doberman, sounds like you done a decent job with the one you have.
You dont have to have a ‘gun dog’ to take it shooting and it do its job well

A lot to be said for this sentiment

Met quite a few stalkers over the years with “guard type” dogs who think they’re another Mike Ritland with an ex military K9 complete with bandana and a harness on the animal which also has a “tough” name

All they’re short of is some doggy goggles for the animal

Nothing wrong with the working dog of any variety but I avoid the Walt handlers

Remind me of the type of class chap with the Rottweiler and studded collar walking in a park

Matching the owners own collar perhaps " twinning " LOL

I've got a German shepherd who will track deer quite happily. Once she had an idea of what was required she just cracked on. Whether it was live scenting or following a track she was great, the gwp is now following her footsteps, he's got big boots to fill.
Just introduce your next to gun fire properly and you should be grand
