Transporting Ammo on a Plane

Deer-Fox, thats a new one on me. Having flown into Joh'burg and changed flights to Vic Falls with BA all the way in 1998, I had no problems, except the ****s left two guncases on the runway at Joh'burg airport  We got them back about 5 hours later, they packed them onto an Air Zim flight, although the third guncase arrived ok.

I have never heard of BA not handling Sporting Firearms within SA. Mind you I have to say that BA in general are not very good at handling F Arms, they seem to change their minds like you would change your socks.

In general I used to keep the bolt in the rifle in a locked hardcase. However since about 1998 they started Xraying the case prior to taking you to customs. I therefore thought it prudent to leave the bolt out inside the case. Leaving a bolt in your main luggage I would not do. The reason being that you are more likely to loose your luggage than a rifle case, and without the bolt, well think about it

PeteE No you might hold the plane up with a firing pin !!!!!!!!

You are right of course there is no logic applied by airlines, and of course also by this wonderful, smartarse, numbnut minded government either :-P

Hi Sikamalc
In 2001 I flew from Birmingham to Paris then to Johannesburg and after a lot of fuss about the Gun cases all 3 cases were left at Birmingham Airport they arrived South Africa 4 days later,

In 2004 on a return flight from Argentina 2 cases were not loaded on the plane home again arrived 4 days later by a so called licensed courier who was happy to leave my case with a friend not see any of my details

So I’m with you leave the bolt in

Simon

Well, ammo will be locked in a metal case, mind you a detemined 6 year old can break into a cash box if so minded.

The rifle will be in a locked case, 2 combination locks and 2 padlocks.

Bolt, mag and mod will all be in the same case with the rifle.

Ringing BA tomorrow to confirm the rifles, 2 of us travelling together with rifles, will see what their responce is!

Jerry

Deer -Fox, seems like you really hit trouble big time. I make it a rule where possible to always fly direct on the main flight if I am carrying Firearms. the thought of going through another country and getting off the plane is not my idea of fun.

I have an American client hunting again with me this year, he tells me that American Airlines have stopped carrying Sporting Weapons  I fear it is going to get worse, with many of the airlines refusing to carry firearms. I think Ryan Air has also changed its policy sometime ago.

Madness all of it

just looked at my passport to get the right dates
i flew with SA airlines direct from heathrow to capetown in end of may 2003 rifle and shotgun were in a hard case plastic lockable gun case with the bolt in the case ,ammunition was in a red metal money cash box with a 80 rounds of 30-06 180 grain heads kept in my suitcase along with 4 hunting knives on entry to airport went straight to check in and waited for customs to come and sort the paper work out the female customs officer apologised for the delay in getting to us then proceded to do the paper work once finished she put a firearms label on both gun case and suitcase which was took off us to go into the plane secure storage all we had left to worry about was hand luggage ,on arrival to capetown both suitcase and guncase was brought straight to the customs booth were all was checked and filled in the permits
this was the same 13 days later on our return to cape town airport for the return flight , the only problems we had was waiting for customs in heathrow again about half hour i know things may of changed abit since then

Slight side track, but I couldn't help laughing about this.
I was flying to Italy last year with some meat that my mates had shot, but could not take with them. I did all the checks re taking meat products abroad with the relavent embassy's. I took the meat in a freezer bag as hand luggage, as the airlines forbid carrying perishables in the hold. I guess this is to protect them if your bag goes AWOL. Anyhow I get to the security point and my hand luggage is x-rayed. I was told I could not take a frozen hare on board as I might use it as a weapon!
Any suggestions as to what the news headlines would have been?
