Transporting Ammo On Flight

Based on all my previous experiences..... borrow a rifle at your destination

I have done this in the past for an African hunt where I knew that the shots would be out to about 200yrds. It was much easier. Unfortunately it isn't an option this time as I have been told that shots will range from about 450 to 600 yards so I need to know drops, etc. So not as straightforward.

Did you confirm that this was ok prior booking or travelling or did you just turn up and try. Which airline, airport and how long ago. This would be the easiest option. Arriving at my destination without the ammo if there was any issues at check-in would be a disaster.

Norwegian and then Air Greenland initially from Gatwick, then Copenhagen.

I recently sold the case I used for several flights I got mine on Amazon.

Do the holes for the lock need to be metal for the ammo box. I believe that the rifle case needs metal on the case where the holes are.

How to pack your firearms and ammunition

• Pack your firearms and ammunition together in an appropriate carriage case, or if this is not possible, securely inside your checked bag with your personal belongings (except to/from South Africa and Italy, and from Romania and Croatia).
• Be aware that any bag packed with personal items as well as your firearm and/or ammunition must not contain liquids in containers over 100ml or other items prohibited in hand baggage, as it has to go through the hand baggage security checks.
• If you're travelling to/from South Africa, Italy, or from Romania, check in your firearms and ammunition in individual locked cases, separate from any checked bag with your personal belongings. In this instance, you will not be charged an extra baggage fee for the separate ammunition case if you exceed your free baggage allowance.
• When travelling from Croatia, firearms must be packed in a locked case, separate from ammunition and personal items that can be packed together in another locked case. In this instance, you will not be charged an extra bag fee for one of these cases if you go over your free checked baggage allowance. You will still need to pay the required firearm/ammunition fee for each case containing a firearm or ammunition and extra bag charges for any further bags that exceed your free checked bag allowance.
• If you're travelling to/from the US, visit the TSA website for full details on transporting firearms and ammunition.
• You cannot combine ammunition allowances for more than one person into one or more bags.
• Ammunition needs to be in either its original packaging or a suitable container that prevents movement between shells or cartridges (loose ammunition is not permitted).
• Make sure that firearms are unloaded and each firearm is accompanied by the appropriate certificate.
• Do not use 'explosives' labels on bags with ammunition.

Whomever you chose to fly with - print off their rules. Take that with you. Show it to 'their' staff, who do not always understand/follow/know 'their' rules.


Be prepared to pay through the nose.

Jobsworth at Belfast made me remove my ammo from the plastic packaging insert they were in (safe), as they supposedly had to be in a wooden box, so wifey had some smellies in a wooden box which were emptied out and in went the ammo loose (not as safe), which was very smart !?!

Another time they refused to put my rifle on the plane as the case didn't have a firearms tag attached, which was the cops fault! I raised the issue with a stewardess who noticed my mood and she took it up with the captain who being a countryman sorted it, rifle put in hold and apologies from the jobsworth .

Always had an armed escort through the English airports until the paperwork was checked, made me feel special .

I use small peli case for ammo, no requirement for metal were padlock goes with Virgin, but a couple of trips ago somebody tried to force locks through the plastic holes, all I do now is put a metal washer between the two faces when I close the lid and put padlock through.

I use a small peli case, can't remember the number. Holds 60 rounds of .308 or 8x57jrs in factory packaging. Locked with two padlocks. Every trip abroad its travelled in my checked in luggage. Just once, on flight out of Turkey has it had to travel separately and the Turkish Airlines lost it for two days.
