Yes Countryboy, he did have a look at that and was quite happy with the condition. Regarding the word 2Topping", that was my choice of words as I couldn't remember the exact words that he had used!
I have had an e-mail from the Tree Officer which has confirmed his thoughts that it belongs to Rochdale Borough Housing and has given me the contact details for the right department so I will take it up with them and see what happens.

He doesn't hang about anyway.
I think some councils are still a bit old school with 'topping' but generally not a good idea on a beech

Just when i looked at the photo again to see if u could see signs of previous management i noticed it, just depending on the shape above but water tends to gather in the crook and over time becomes a rot hole in the tree.
U often see them failing at places like that and revealing a big cavity inside.
