I don't think "minor issue" was meant to
Infer that conservation in Southern Africa is a minor issue. Rather that our ignorant politicians will not accept the benefits of controlled hunting to conservation and rural economies. If one listens to the debates in Paliament and the Lords one cannot fail to be astounded at the levels of ignorance displayed.
When one looks at current issues here and worldwide one cannot fail to see this potential ban other than as a minor distraction .
 
I have to agree with both @cjm1066 and @Namman on this one....
Having just watched our hate driven anti Grouse shooting idiots in Holyrood virtue signalling about "vital" legislation - despite this being the same week that the levels of child poverty have become a national embarrassment, the number of deaths from non prescribed drugs went over the 1200 mark in the last year, the amount of money squandered on two ferries which are six years late (and counting) and three times over budget (and counting) and never mention the parlous state of the NHS up here.....or the odd £11K fiddled by an ex minister....
Added to that the UK economy teeters along, the NHS is still in a state, there's a war in Ukraine, the Middle East, Sudan and numerous other hot spots around the world.
But, our mighty leaders still find it more important to waste precious time and money on debating worthless causes which have little or no impact on the vast majority of the population of this country.
Oh, for some real politicians who can concentrate on the major issues, rather than minding other peoples business:banghead:
 
Booked my first trip out to SA for next May. This will be a right sweat. What’s the thoughts going forwards? To be honest the amendments to allow non cites animals in, seemed an okay compromise but now we’re back to square one. What sort of timeframe are we looking at?

May 24 or May 25? If this May you will be ok as the ban will not include anything shot before the date of the implementation of the legislation. May 2025 could be a gamble

Yeah it’s difficult. Don’t pay the deposit and you might never go. Or it falls through when you could have gone and then it resurfaces again in 1-2 years time.

Worst case scenario is you go on a cull hunt but it’s a lot of effort and travel for that.


What I can’t fully grasp at this stage is where it is in relation to parliament. The last one took a while to get to commons. Even longer to get through lords and then it eventually ran out of time. I assume it would have to be pushed through before an election in November?

Took my eye off this one after I imported my ibex last October, at that point it was all off after being introduced and then pulled from parliament, if I remember correctly due to lack of parliamentary time left to consider it. this bill now been re introduced to uk parliament but what stage of consideration is it at? I ask as, in the Scottish parliament scenario, there are 3 stages of a bill before it goes for royal assent normally a few month after the end of stage 3 and once it’s voted through by the parliament, the last 2 stage (2&3) are where amendments can be made. so assuming uk parliament with has similar process, it might be that the cites list comes back in as a compromise position. Fingers crossed as a carpet ban on importing all trophies is over reaching imo.

Having a look at it, it appears to be cites listed animals which is ‘okay’ ish for plains game.

What seems weird is that if it passes commons two years in a row, it can go straight past lords to get approved without a veto - my understanding from reading . Politics isn’t my bag

I will ask my good lady tonight, she is knowledgeable in uk legislation process.

I was looking to do a trip to Namibia in next 5 years and like you started to look at the cites list cross ref with my target species. Most plains game are not on cites unless you look to some slightly rarer sub species, for example (from memory, and I may be wrong) I think the Hartmans mountain zebra is one on the cites but the bushells / common one isn’t.

Thats roughly where I am at the moment. The bulk of the routine stuff should still be okay if it goes through as was previously planned. What worries me slightly is the shipping aspect. I can just imagine a crate of non-cites skins arriving and getting sent back or held up in confusion with new legislation.
