Yesterday I had to go and pick something up in the afternoon for my sons nursery, it's was only 15 mins or so away from one of the farms and where I've been so busy recently the Mrs said, why don't you take the gun and pop into the farm on the way back to try for a deer. Well she didn't have to tell me twice. So with the car loaded I went to pick up the other thing, though it would only leave with me about 1hr - 2hrs till the end of legal shooting light i thought still worth a chance and its nice to be out. I didn't have high hopes as the rain on the way down was very heavy and the deer don't live on this farm but walk across/eat on it, though I suspected they would be either back in their cover or if I'm lucky working back across.
Spotted 2 just off the end boundry working back to the wood annoyingly about 30mins before the end of legal light and thought that would be it but maybe a muntjac might work round on its route so I'll head down and wait.

As I'm walking Major began to scent the air quite heavily, it was getting dark so a quick scan with the thermal and it picked up 2 roe right where I wanted to get to, which was quite possibly the darkest place on the farm as its right next to the little spinney and they were within touching distance of it. Wind was in my favour but due to the trees I couldn't make out for sure if they were bucks or does from where I was so I tried to get closer for confirmation.
The squelching underfoot as I got close was a pain and they were off. Unfortunate but I'm glad I saw some, as I suspected if I had been able to get there an hour or so earlier it would have been a very different story. I waited till the end of legal light but no muntjac came through as I suspected given the time they usually run around but was still worth a crack.
On the plus I got a text from a guy that the farmer knows saying....my mum found your range finder when walking the dog, pop round after and you can grab it
unbelievable!!
