trying something new and different

I just thought I would write about my recent experience of airsoft incase it might catch the attention of other shooters.
I introduced a friend of a friend to rifle shooting because I like to promote the sport and I knew he had the intention of one day applying for a FAC. He offered to bring his airsoft guns round for a "mess about" so I took him up on the offer.
He brought his whole collection of airsoft guns on a sunny sunday afternoon. The 3 of us donned our masks and were each handed a very realistic full metal construction sub machine gun that fired 6mm plastic bb's at approx 320fps. The 3 of us spent the next hour running round the farm yard like teenagers giving each other pain. It was the most fun Ive had in ages. So much so that the 2 of us without airsoft guns have just gone out and bought not only one but 2 airsoft guns each because we were so impressed by them.
The "bb" guns we had as kids weren't very powerful and wouldn't have been powerful enough to have a proper "battle". But the gun I first bought was 1.2 joules/ fired bb's at 345fps and was capable of sending a 6mm bb through one side of a coke can or 4 sides of cardboard. It was a formidable beast and you certainly knew the difference between a hit and a miss even out at 30-40 yds. As for less than 10 yards prepare for blood on bare skin! and dont even think about not wearing eye protection. I have since heard of people losing teeth in this game.
Even though I have a semi auto .22rf I had forgotten how much fun semi auto and full auto were. And at approx £10 per 3300 bb's it doesnt break the bank for literally hours of fun. There are even biodegradable BB's too.
The guns I bought were AR15 style using electric motor/spring piston power that run on a 7.2v lithium polymer battery and were capable of 1000's of shots on a single charge. The whole set up didnt break the bank either. Prices as follows:

Nuprol assault rifle £125
extra 370 round magazine £10
battery £15
charger £15
mask £15 +

My set up was a cheap and cheerful set up off the internet that I would thoroughly recommend to anyone else considering starting the sport. Of course you can spend lots more on full metal construction but I was just in it for the fun factor.
Happy Days

the plastic bb's wont biodegrade for a long time so there are biodegradable ones. I dont like plastic waste and prefer the idea of biodegradable but I can justify a bit when I see the amount of unnecessary waste my work colleagues make daily by buying plastic bottles and throwing them in general waste!

Over here we hoover them up and ship them out to the Caribbean where they are ground up and used for albatross and turtle food

I do find them enjoyable. Not enough to go buy my own set up, but clearly a fun distraction.

My first experience with them was actually in a gallery in Ireland. I do think I scared the proprietor with my skill set until I explained my background. I had just retired from the military 3 months prior and had gamed the system to go requakify with every weapon I could while I was still shooting the governments ammo. So, my skills were rather fresh, and the owner admitted that his normal clientele was birthday parties for 12 year olds.

Anyhow, it was a fun time
