Tsa locks

i find getting a set of suited padlocks are good because you can hide the same key in your wallet and pocket etc and stand less
change of loosing it.

But in theory once checked through security it goes straight to the plane, having said that, if I were going to take a rifle abroad again I would use my own locks, not TSA, they are not compulsory, but going to/from the states if the case has a hole for a lock, it must have one.
It doesn't, it'll go through the baggage system and wait untill the plane is ready.

Different Countries,Airlines have different rules. Never used TSA locks.
I fly a lot with firearms, what works for me are Pelican cases with combination code padlocks( not set to 0000)No chance of losing key.
Was in LHR T5 customs a few years ago when an elderly American couple arrived asking for the “special “ key they had been told that customs had to open a TSA lock as they had lost it. The look on their faces when he reached under the counter and produced a hammer and large screwdriver was priceless.
