Cannot say I have had the same experience, taken them close to nine months now for a variation, and to add to that Ive had to constantly check in to see progress and make sure the variation actually comes through. Only just been signed off now, still waiting for the new certificate!
I dont know if its the county you are in from my experience of about 4 variations over the past couple of years it has always been 3-4 weeks total processing time. I also really like the online way they do things as well, no need to send back your old certificate you just post it back once you get your new one so things like ammo purchases are not an issue while the variation is progressing.
To be brutally honest, I have had nothing but trouble with them since I applied for my FAC, when I got my SGC they where great to deal with (albeit a bit slow). This variation has been an uphill battle, they contacted the one of the wrong landowners about my permission and then after I corrected their mistake, refused to add the other permission, and being TVP they still mandate closed licenses for five years, so I have to go through the whole thing again for the remaining permission!!!
I have to agree that their online system is quite nice and a breath of fresh air compared to other forces application systems though, that and most of the time you can actually get in contact with someone.

Im unsure on tvp, but i applied for a FAC with different constabulary, feo suggested i go coterm as i already have a SGC, phoned within a week to say that the paperwork is done and he's supporting my application, i suggested i hadnt paid the difference between initial application and coterm, and he said they wouldnt request further payment until it's been approved
As an update for those that are interested my variation just dropped through the door Wednesday so this was in total 5 weeks start to finish. Easter was in the middle of this so that would have slowed things up a bit with holidays ect. My conversation with the FEO took place a week after submission.
