Unfinished Business - DSC2 Advice

I am looking for some advice,

Back in 2011 I registered for my DSC 2. I then got on with stalking and promptly forgot all about it. With 6 months to go, I suddenly thought “I’d better get on to this DSC2 before it expires”. An accredited witness very kindly agreed to help and after half-a- dozen stalks (the usual; right deer wrong place, wrong deer, right place, ach, two deer in the same place routine) by November I had covered everything except one final shot. Then life went horribly wrong. I called my witness friend and explained, the DSC lapsed and I spent the next few years sorting out life stuff.

I am thinking next year I’d like to sort out this unfinished business and get the DSC2 completed. I invested significant time, energy and funds in pursuing the first one. I did it properly, no chats and a signature down the pub as people claimed in those days. It was one of the most nerve-wrecking things I have ever had to do!

I would like to complete it in a focussed and efficient way, not wasting too much of my own or my witnesses time on unproductive stalking. Although a recreational stalker I have 20 years of varied experience made my mistakes , learned from them, and very much done the “hard yards”.

Any suggestions about possible routes or recommendations would be appreciated.

Jelen do a 2 day dsc 2, initiative, not cheap but gets it done and dusted ,its really geared for people who know how to stalk, gralloch, and deal with a carcass, its an option if you don't have any alternatives

Thanks had a look at their website this is the sort of thing I was looking for, perhaps a little closer to home.

Have you contacted an outfit like South Ayrshire Stalking? I am sure they could provide what you're after? Probably not the cheapest, but maybe an option dependent on budget.

I wish you all the best for achieving your DSC2.

Did you have any of your initial portfolio signed off?
three year cut of I think. Had a mate in a similar situaion. 2011registration would mea it was valid until 2014 so even if his did stuff on the last day of 2014 it would become more than three years old in 2017

Finnbear,/Richie/All, Thanks guys, yes, location is West Perthshire. It was all signed off except one element missing shot on a deer. I have asked DMQ if any of it is admissible as evidence, kept up my skills and knowledge just didn’t submit in time.

I have checked in with my original AW - it seems a bit bad mannered not to ask if he would like to assist if possible.

Cheers

I struggled to complete the three Culls mainly due to bad luck with weather (fog, storms, heavy rain, 3rd. Battle of the Somme mud...) resulting in the AW cancelling repeatedly.
A friend recommended to book myself in with an Outfitter in Scotland , fly in from Glos so not to bother to drive, and to complete the DSC2 on Roe DOES (as it is more cost-effective) in 1-2 days, and combine it with taking my wife and doing some touristy things and stay in a nice hotel in Edenborough. It all worked out as planned and despite a 1st. day of very hard and difficult hunting (Blizzards, snow drifts...etc.) we got 1 Roe doe at last light. The next day the weather was bright and sunny, I could have taken 12 (due to a fortunate set of circumstances getting accidently mixed up with a rough shoot pushing lots of deer into my position, but of course I only needed 2) . DSC2 signed off and completed. The total cost in time and money well worth it, in the end. The outfitter was www.scothunt.co.uk but ofcourse there are many other excellent Prof. Guides that also do AW Stalks.

Thanks Erik, these guys are relatively local to me and according to their website, I know at least one of their guides who was a former member of a wee game shooting syndicate I’m in.

I have put out a couple of feelers to recommendations from forum members and will drop these guys an E:mail to at least get a proposal from them.

cheers

Vernon Waters of www.scothunt.co.uk was the Gent who took me out for the AW stalks - had a great time and learned a lot.

Thanks All,

I appreciate the advice. I made contact with all the recommendations for AW services who can do a condensed assessment.

My former AW (who still had my portfolio and narratives) suggested someone who didn’t realise was accredited and local (whom I know) we have agreed two days at the hinds in January on very local familiar ground and facilities.

Its worked out well. Thank you all again, I’ll let you know how it goes.
