Anyone claimed for safety work boots etc? I'm begrudgingly squeezing £50 from wallet for new work boots, then someone said you can claim cash back if you buy own safety boots?? Not sure where to claim it? @VSS any idea?

Cashback ?¿? are you dreaming, money only travels one way!

If you claim on your form and do all the work then your tax allowance will be increased very marginally.

You claim it on your self assessment (if self employed). If you use the simplified method of just giving a single figure for total expenses, file thr receipt away with the others and include it when you do your return

If you're self employed then any protective clothing is an allowable expense.
(It's amazing how much of what you wear can be considered "protective", when you come to think about it....😉)

If you're employed then your boss should pay for protective clothing.

I'm not aware of any "cash back" scheme on workwear. If you find one, let me know!

Ha ok "cash back" was the way the old boy in pub described it last night. Cheers I'll have a look.

You can claim for 3 years previously missed and if I recall correctly that might just come in the form of a tax refund, that will certainly feel like getting cash back.

Employed or self employed?

Safety boots are PPE and if required must be provided FOC to employees. PPE maintenance costs I.e. overall washing (overalls are PPE) is also the responsibility of the employer. If an employee washes company uniform which isn’t PPE they can claim tax relief (used to be £60 a year and probably still the same) for this.

Self employed safety boots are VAT exempt so this can’t be claimed although 100% net cost can be put against a business expense.

How many pairs of boots have you got through since starting work? What have you done before ?

My employer did the do ,we got an extra £40 a year on our tax allowance for " laundry " .
As in wash your workwear at home get tax relief to cover your expenses .
As Tim said they provided free boots and uniform but you should be able to claim yours back as a legitimate expense.

Protective clothing is only an allowable expense if it’s relevant to your business.
If you’re a self employed hairdresser you aren’t going to be able to claim for steel toe cap boots.
