Using the VFG Cleaning System

For you guys that use the VFG cleaning system, what is your cleaning regimen? I've seen videos of using this system with Schultz & Larsen barrels, and it appears that the pellets are run through the barrel without any lubricant or solvent on them. Are these pellets meant to be run through dry? Or do they have some sort of lubricant embedded in them? I'd appreciate any insights into this cleaning system.

I run my first VFG felt through with some KG-1 Carbon remover, followed by dry felts until clean (usually 5) followed by 3 passes with a dry bore snake.

Recently sold a barrel that was bore-scoped by Ed and looked as good as new.

I run a felt soaked in Legia through barrels if they are going to be stored for any length of time.

I just run them through dry, unless I'm doing a deep clean.
I clean after ever outing, 4 felts usually does it. I only deep clean when accuracy starts to drop off.

Why anyone is going through the hassle of screwing those felts on and off is beyond me. Patches are much easier to use, have a larger surface and do a much better job at absorbing liquids if they are made of the right material.

Besides that, what is a dry felt/patch/brush run through a dry barrel supposed to do? It may catch some loose debris, at best. Otherwise it's quite a useless thing to do.

They are fiddly but the copper felts with the kg stuff really does work well for me.Then it's a polish with the bore paste.
That's all S&L rifles recommend for cleaning, and it's a tried and tested system.

It's no hassle at all really, 4 felts through the barrel in about 1 minute. The first patch usually comes out black, 4th is clean. It's removing all that residue that's left in the barrel, which in turn, can attract moisture. Anyway, it works for me.

Dead easy to use
Carbon remover soaked into a standard (white) pellet of appropriate diameter which is pushed through slowly - wait a bit to give solvent time to act on the soot etc
Then push clean dry felts through until clean
Use copper remover as directed on the KG bottle when/if needed
I only use the green ("intensive") felt pellets when going for a deep clean after a heavy session at the range or if I begin to suspect serious fouling - which isn't often
As said above I run a felt soaked in rifle oil through if putting a rifle away for any longer than a few days - I usually run a clean felt through whenever I take a rifle out of the cabinet just in case I have oiled the barrel, and that serves as a check that the barrel is clear/clean too

I don't find the system fiddly to use at all, in fact I much prefer it to messing about with patches or 4x2 on a jag, they also seem much less likely to get stuck too

I use a wet oiled felt on first pass to remove any residual crud then however many dry ones until they come out clean, after that it's just one lightly oiled felt push through for storage purposes. That's the method that I use for my S&L, no solvents whatsoever, and the impregnated felts plus paste now and again.

For what it’s worth I’ve been using the VFG system exactly as demonstrated on the Great Dane Rifles website and videos for 3 years now. I’ve never had any issues and a perfect clean on my S&L every time and I never use any additives! Ask any gunsmith who knows S&L and he’ll tell you that the only time they ever see barrel issues on an S&L is when users do their own ( bore scrub, foam, patch type) cleaning regime.
VFG works! Use it and trust it like I do.

I agree. I’ve also found (and been dealer advised) that it’s not necessary to constantly clean the barrel (with VFG of course). I’ve just run in a new 6.5C barrel with 43 rounds, 20 of which were lead followed by 23 non toxic. Barrel looked perfect and a quick intensive felt followed by a couple of comfort pads and it’s like new. Generally only run a comfort tab through when it’s been wet after stalking.
