Varget dilemma

I’d love to have a rifle like this!
I had the good fortune to recently have to work up loads for my bosses 8x60rs 8x60jr and also zero his 9.3x74r double rifles. Prior to him going driven boar shooting....
Loved shooting them on the range but would be good to have a ‘real go’ with one!!!!

Palmer Mike

Driven Boar. Ah yes. That's the sort of thing.

I was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time (serendipity). I actually wasn't even sure which 8mm calibre it was - there are many of course - when I made my offer to buy it.
I just knew I had to have it.

Bought it as an 8 x 57JR .After sending a few rounds out and looking at the now "reformed in the chamber" brass I realised it wasn't 57mm ! Something amiss ! (I did, however take the precaution of using .318 JR loads first) As above all good as it was .323

A lot of research and aggro. (well it is an old double)

Owning this rifle has been an journey of eduction and pleasure. I just wish I had the chance to get out and use it more (like most of us I suspect)

All in good time.

Aye

Yes had to pay a lot of attention while loading bosses rifles, make sure not to put the .323 loads in the .318 rifle

Standard post-Reach alternatives to H. VarGet are:

IMR-4166 Enduron (rather faster burning)

Reload Swiss RS52 (charges usually end up close, but the Reload Swiss powder will give slightly higher MVs)

As @Muir says, Lovex SO-62 is a good option, same applications and very similar characteristics / performance to longstanding IMR-4064.

Alliant Re15 (a tad slower burning, slightly larger charges needed to produce VarGet pressures and MVs). Norma 203-B is the same product and a little cheaper if available locally.

Viht has nothing directly comparable, but both N140 and the slower burning N150 grade are excellent matches to the 8X57 IRS with a 175gn bullet.

Ramshot TAC will work in this application, but is by no means the perfect VarGet replacement. Its slightly slower burning stablemate 'Wild Boar' (Accurate-2520 in US tables) is actually a better internal ballistic partner to 8X60. Both Ramshot powders will leave rather a lot of airspace in the case being very fine-grained ball and having higher energy levels than VarGet.

RS52 / N150 pretty much are closest to Varget with similar charge weights but slightly different MV's. Widely and easily available and REACH compliant.
