A new job means im looking at replacing my perfectly good Astra van that im quite happy chucking a couple of Roe in the back and shooting off etc.
Now doing a 30 mile each way motorway commute everyday and as reliable as the Astra has been im looking for something with a bit more comfort and capable of doing a minimum of 50-55 mpg that the Astra does.
I know theres already an SUV thread but my requirements are firstly comfort and economy for the daily motorway drive and then the practicality of shooting coming second.
The only off roading will be clean fields and a bridleway so regular tyres will be fine.
Budget 7K and the 2.0tdi Tiguans have caught my eye but no real concrete mpg for pure motorway driving.
Any suggestions, advice appreciated cheers.
 
Seat Leon estate? 60+ mpg and comfortable, Skoda yeti if you want 4x4 and a bit more ground clearance?

Or as the singing stalker says above, if it ain’t broke… stick with the Astra for now and save up a few £k to be ready to replace it when it does expire.

Oh, and buy a plasters bath for the boot for the new car, keeps all the slather out of the carpets 😁

I used to do 78 miles per day for a work commute and it gave 60 mpg motorway on petrol at a steady 60 cruise control.
Pre 2017 means its £20 road tax

Comfort ok and for a 1.2 it actually makes a good tow car..... once had about 1.5 ton of sand behind it :oops:
 
I've got a Mk2 2.0tdi Tiguan, assuming that's what you are looking at. Mine's a 4motion 150 bhp. On a motorway run, assuming it's fairly clear and you are reasonable on the pedal you should be getting a bit over 50 MPG, depending on conditions. So maybe not quite as good as your Astra, but darned close for a heavier car. The boot isn't the biggest in class, so check it's good for your needs before pulling the trigger. Although the boot floor has 2 height settings and the rear seats slide forward (and obviously can fold flat if needed).

You can get higher bhp models that do less MPG so check what you are looking at. The 150bhp (which is by far the most common) is fine performance-wise unless you are Sterling Moss.
 
Plus one for a Skoda..... if you can find a cheap enough second hand one. Now on my second Kamiq which gives 50 plus MPG. Decent amount of space in the back when the seats are down. Or a Karoq if you've got a bit more spare cash, but good second hand ones are harder to find...

This or the mk2 Superb Estate - you can get a really good one for £5k with the same 150hp engine as the Tiguan - except you can just about get the Tiguan in the Superb’s boot. I have a Superb mk3 which is a bit more money and I’d have another one in a heartbeat.
 
I suppose the one downside to buying an Octavia is making sure it's not an ex taxi. Having said that,we had a 1.6 diesel auto that had been a taxi and it was no bother at all.
 
Use Car Vertical or a similar vehicle history checker and you’ll get all the info needed. BTW I get c.60 mpg from my 1.9 diesel on a run and 45+ around town.
 
I had a 1.6tdi Skoda Fabia for 8 years and it was great, changed up to an Octavia estate for a couple of years which was also great and loads(!) of room. Now have a Renault trafic as the tools in and out all the time were ruining the Octavia. Brother has a superb estate and does serious miles, it never misses a beat.
