Venison Price drop!

As I am not in the uk, I can only go from past experience of shooting deer from 79 - 2015 in Hampshire, as I had a full time job it was a hobby, but a hobby with bonuses, unlike digging foxes and hunting , shooting birds etc which just cost money, 90% of my deer went to game dealers, the price was the price, even got unpaid for three reds I shot one morning, when a dealer went bust that afternoon.
As low as the price goes for amateur stalkers, it’s a bonus
As to moaning about overheads like training etc, you created them by supporting the likes of the BDS, BASC, in there money making schemes.
Sunday I will go fishing 20 ltrs of petrol in the boat, gas in Ute, I will catch snapper hopefully and give the majority away, Monday I will shoot goats , no one will pay me one penny it’s a hobby.
To many people think they are going to make a living out of deer ( the venison market is too small and farmed deer is seen as premium ) even shooting two or three per outing it was still a hobby, make the most of your hobby’s.
 
Happens just about every year. As soon as the doe/hind season kicks in, the price drops. Its never going to change in my opinion. The only way the price will go now, is down. God I can remember some 30 plus years ago when the price was about 20p. It wasnt worth the poachers going out.
 
It could have been longer ago. But I well remember the bottom dropping right out of venison whilst we were culling in the Highlands. At the time it was not worth dragging anything off.
 
We must be of the same vintage Malc. I remember on the late eighties and early nineties getting 20 to 30 p for reds in Scotland. Luckily we had a dealer nearby so didn't cost too much to take them in. I used to get about 80p for Fallow in England.
With reds now unless I have got at least 4 I butcher them where shot and leave the rest for the wildlife to eat.
It's over an hour to the game dealer £20 worth of diesel and 3 hours.

Mine was for Fallow and Roe at £1 a lb, Cotswolds and Warwks. Batsford, Middle Hill and Ragley estates.
 
Was once offered £20 for a fallow buck - so i butchered it and gave it away in return for beer and wine. Saved me the diesel and I got more than £20 worth of drink, so quids in compared to the dealer.

As is said above, the price is dependent on supply. Once the main season starts then the supply rises and price drops. So options to overcome this would be to stagger the seasons more (i know they are more staggered in Scotland than in E&W) in order to flatten out the supply curve, or simply accept that it is what it is.

Thing is, venison is still seen as a luxury meat, despite the game dealers getting a better buy and sell price than you would for a farmed animal, say sheep or goat of the same size, so the alternative is to get people eating more venison. But that means changing pricing to the customer and perspectives on eating game, so no quick thing.

I remember those days. My uncle would drive past fallow and that was one of the reasons the fallow numbers sky rocketed

And there lies the problem, I would have shot as many as possible, it cost as much to take one as five to the dealer.
 
do many hobbies pay for them selves? golf must be as expensive in kit and clothes, loads of walking in all weather, loosing balls that cost as much as rounds then walk back to the car. ive only used a dealer a few times.
take what you can get as a bonus or work out a supply chain your self.

I expect my stalking to pay for itself, one way or another. No reason why it shouldn't. But simply offloading deer at an AGHE isn't going to achieve that, unless you're shooting half-a-dozen or more large deer per outing. And if you are, then it's probably more than just a hobby anyway.

I'm not sure who said it but they're selling trimmed, packed venison with some form of guarantee as to the quality, not a dead animal still covered in fur with zero guarantee.

youre one of the few that has gone whole hog(deer) and made it work. you clearly wouldnt be happy with dealer price can can see why it is and found another solution
