Very early Winchester 52

I thought I'd share a recent acquisition - a very early Winchester 52 (circa 1926) in .22LR. I believe it has been converted from a standard weight Target Rifle into more of a Sporter. It still retains its 28" barrel which unusually is a special order Stainless Steel Winchester barrel. It came complete with a Winchest A5 scope. The proper Winchester made sporters only started in 1934. The mag release button is missing so I need to find one of those or have one made. The last owner learnt to shoot with it, aged 7, but is now 82 so it's been in this configuration for a long time

Forgot to mention that the Winchester 52 rifle came with an original Winchester made leather scope case for the A5 scope. However, on closer inspection the case must have been paired with a WW1 sniper scope because it is Broad Arrow marked and also has an Enfield Inspectors mark - one of 907 ordered during the war.

Have a look at the scope tube and also the A5’s mounts to see if there is any more Broad Arrows, they could be very small but if you can find one on the scope you’re a lucky guy.

It sounds like you know what you’re talking about, well now that’s a shame there’s no crows foot on the tube or mounts, not even a tiny engraved one ?

What about the leather scope case, is there any instructions inside the lid ?

You obviously know the value of such things.

Very interesting, good find, and the rifle l think is sort after as well.

I’ve seen an A5 crows foot marked scope for sale quite recently, they’re not cheap are they, and it didn’t have its leather tube.

I do have an A5 in lovely condition but unfortunately for me a commercial one.

I do have a Galilean sniper sight in its leather pouch that was used prior to having any scopes.

I had a chance at one of those a few years ago in a small regional auction near Lichfield. It was in its case and the estimate was £60-£80. I left a bid at about £250 but it went for more than that.

When l found the one l own a few years ago it was unknown as to what it was but l knew and was lucky enough to pick it up.

My interests have slightly changed in recent years.

I sent a set of scarce Parker Hale 26mm scope mounts to a guy in Belper to mount a period scope on his Winchester 52, still don’t know if he ever competed with it.

The Lyman scope you have isn’t a common scope to have, quite difficult to find and needless to say expensive.

My interest as l said has changed slightly l now seem to be more attracted to the Swedish scopes as in my avatar.
