I'm thinking of trying 165gr Virtus bullets in my 7mm PRC for hunting, has anybody else tried them and what do they think ????.
What load are people running ???
Cheers Steve.

I’ve just ordered some of their 7mm 120 grn bullets to try but I didn’t see a 7mm 165 grn option listed on their website.

Does your barrel have a fast enough twist for such a relatively heavy copper 7mm bullet?

I shot the pre-production 165s and they worked very well and very accurate. 1:8 twist is perfect. Using RS76 - can look up the data if you need it.

Yes 7PRC

72gr RS76
Peterson brass
Fed 215M
165 Merlin
2958FPS
22 inch barrel
5 shot group

Any real world experience of these on larger game would be very interesting please. Building a 7mm PRC currently and mulling NL ammo option for larger plains game.

This is where I think you’re over thinking on this subject, when I first loaded copper many many many moons ago I never worried about rifle twist, I picked a grain bullet. I picked a powder and I shot it until it worked.

I’m now going into loading 150 grain barnes in my 7 x 57, do I have any inch of doubt that they will work?

No is a simple answer!

They will work sometimes they may take a little bit of figuring out ,but what you need to do is stop thinking about what the rulebook says, just get on with it don’t worry about it crack on!

I’d stay with it - they are still a fledgling company and the support world go a long way to helping them make a success of it in a competitive market.

Simply not true I’m afraid. The heavier you go in copper the more the twist rate becomes crucial for stability. That’s why the manufacturers recommend a minimum twist rate.

I was loading copper 10 years before it became popular here in the uk, I used to have bullets on a 2 week rolling order from Utah, I’m sure I’ll be fine 😂😂😂

You just an another expert I’ll prove wrong.

None of that takes away from what he said the stuff you were using was made to work in the standard twist barrels of the day

If you try shoot a 95gr LRX in a 1/10 243 you’re going to have bullets going sideways. Because it is designed for a tighter twist.

Bullet length and twist rate and tied together. Not sure how that’s an argument you will prove wrong

I’ll just load them up and shoot them until I get it right , simple as that 👌

If I can’t get them to shoot, I’m big enough and ugly enough to eat humble pie!

I will be aiming for 1” or less, that’s the quest and as soon as farmer next door get combo out of this stinging nettles I’ll be making a start.

One thing I will say, what do you think we used to do years and years ago when we loaded copper?, There was none of the BS load data that there is today I completely bent the rules of today’s knowledge purely because it wasn’t there!

I still stand by the rules originally of loading copper choose your bullet, choose your powder, get it to shoot. It’s a simple as that.

Vern is a capable chap and easy to talk to. Virtus is a small company. Give him some slack.

I use the Virtus Osprey 150gr in .30 calibre - very accurate and very effective on Reds and Fallow.

The Virtus product is good and giving Vern time to iron out tech supply issues is likely to be worth it.

I’ve had great dealings with Vern, he’s gone out of his way to assist me in the past. Bullets are great too! Hope the OP sticks with it and gets sorted with some.
