I though perhaps I’d weigh in with my experience on this subject, but I’d stress it is only my experience and others will have found differently. Please excuse the long read.
In total since 2018 I have run 5 late model VW Amarok V6 3.0 Highline trucks for my firm. I currently run 2 VW Amarok Highline V6 3.0 high output versions 2020/21 plates). And we run 4 x Isuzu D-Max double cab pickups. 2 are 2020 plate Blades and 2 are new DL40s. All 6 trucks are used every day off-road and on road and all cover between 45k to 50k a year. They are all fitted with hardtops and General Grabber AT3 tyres. All our vehicles are properly looked after and regularly serviced and maintained.
We tried the last model Nissan pickups for a while but I swapped out the entire ‘fleet’ when we discovered they just weren’t up to the job mechanically, or in terms of build quality, electrics/electronics. More than one my team was left stranded in remote countryside after catastrophic failures. Nissan main dealer support was hopeless.
Ford Rangers are thirsty and we just can’t get dealer support. Toyotas are similarly thirsty, but we might soon be reconsidering them to replace the Amaroks.
The Amaroks are excellent when they are excellent. The engines in particular are outstanding. Load carrying ability is outstanding. Off-road ability is seriously good. Fuel consumption is surprisingly good, particularly when compared against the very frugal Isuzus. And they are very comfortable for drivers. Low-tech sub-par phone connectivity is a significant drawback for us. But even worse and more important ….. VW Commercial main dealer support is lamentable - it is virtually non-existent and dreadful even when you can get access. DPF units can be troublesome due to a large batch with a manufacturing fault. But these can be swapped out under warranty although there is a long wait for parts. One of ours has had 3 DPFs under warranty. Other parts can be difficult to impossible to source. We waited 11 months for one part only to be eventually told by VW it was no longer available (for a current model at the time!!). Paint finish can be surprisingly thin, variable and poor leaving some bodywork vulnerable to minor corrosion, but we’ve kept a watch and sorted out any issues as soon as they’ve appeared. We have an outstanding body shop we use.
I am not sure I will be buying the new Amaroks. They are hideously expensive, aimed more at the leisure user, platforms and parts are shared with Ford and main dealer support, as we have discovered, is dreadful. So while we can, we will run what we have.
The Isuzus are very good. Interior build quality is now less agricultural, but less robust. Quality of plastics around lower seat trim is particularly poor. Off-road ability is good. An awful lot of electronic driver aids aimed at on-road use can be very irritating for our team - pings, warning lights and bells going off all the time. Interestingly most of our team prefer to drive the older model. Main dealer support used to be excellent but is now dreadful in our area. Note: windscreen replacement is a pain because of the cameras, radar, lidar, etc mounted behind the rear view mirror. All require recalibration.
All our trucks are now serviced and maintained by an independent garage who looks after us well, uses OE parts and genuine spares and online service histories are updated to keep warranties intact.
The VWs we have are excellent when they are on song - which considering our mileage is remarkably good. They are good enough to keep for the time being. Although quite pricey to buy at the time, they have proved value for money for us and were a good buy. But I probably won’t buy the new Amarok.
As I say - just my experience and others will likely differ.
