Don't forget the truly weird Hawkeye single shot pistol chambered in 256 Winchester Magnum . They made about 3000 of them back in the early sixties , one of the rarer Rugers and highly sought after by Ruger collectors . You're right about the No 3 carbines , I've owned a number of them , great little rifles , although the 45/70 version isn't for the faint hearted .

I've never run across a Ruger Hawkeye so I had to look it up. It looks to be a similar design to the single shot Colt pistols based on the police positive frame.
While I would have quite liked a Ruger number 3 I think that I would have certainly passed if offered one in .45-70. I knew a guy who had one in .223rem and that was a lovely little carbine to shoot, little being the operative word. A cute little thing that belonged in a saddle bucket.
Ruger have made some great guns over the years but for some reason they have never really caught on over here. That is except for the 10/22 mainly post pistol ban, where its used to shoot small-bore gallery rifle events. Maybe it's because they manufacture a good overall design but never quite refine it. The impression that I have of the company is that they are more concerned with production numbers and sales rather than quality. Saying that when Heym took their number 1 rifle and finished it off the result was a beautiful rifle. Lewis Potter did something similar and a friend of mine has one of his rifles in .303 British, a rifle that I really wish I owned.
