Wanted: Live fallow

In an earlier thread, about aspirations for 2019, I said I fancied deer fencing part of my farm and getting my own herd of fallow.
The more I think about it, the more attractive it seems!
Fencing costs are the stumbling block - I had hopes that Welsh Government might provide grant funding for this, on the basis that it would be a farm diversification project, but apparently not (although they may fund larder / food prep areas).
However, I could start small by just fencing a couple of fields, then increase the area year on year as the herd grows and as finances permit.
So, my question is, how easy is it to buy deer? I buy and sell livestock on a regular basis, but no experience of the same with deer. Say I wanted half-a-dozen does and a buck? Where could I find them? I'd want animals that were used to being behind a fence, and which hadn't been darted or received any medication that might preclude them from entering the food chain in the future.
Maybe just pipe dreams, but you never know....

good evening, not fallow but live captured roe.thirty+ years ago i was involved in live catching of roe deer, five does and one buck were sent down to a private deer park in south wales 10000 acres, all fence etc.short version is with in 6 weeks all the roe were dead! poached.

Houghton hall Norfolk, they have many different deer and breeding herds. Julian Stowell(could be wrong spelling) used to be the one to contact.

Julian Stoyel has left Houghton Hall and now runs his own business, Red Oak Deer/Red Oak Genetics. Not sure he has Fallow any more just Red Deer and Water Buffalo? He would know who to contact though. Or you could try James Ellis at Gunton Park also in Norfolk.

Could try Gunton I got a starter herd from there about 10yrs ago all the Menel form, they,ve done well with me , although a too hyper to put through handling race without casualties .reds are easier to work with. Bottle rearing a couple of calves to get really tame hinds does help bring deer into handling system also pets can be used to get weaned calves eating creep quickly

Hi, sounds like an interesting project.
If interested I can put you in touch with a lad who did almost exactly as you are describing a couple of years ago here in South West Scotland. His operation is now up and running and progressing well.

I'm sure he would be more than happy to discuss with you about how he went about it.

I assume that you have looked at the British Deer Farms & Parks Association website?

I see that there's some second hand deer fencing for sale in addition to deer for sale.

As has been said speak to Julian Stoyel, he is one of, if not the most experienced person in Uk for park deer. Most parks catch up every year so it wouldn’t be difficult to get hold of what you require, he will know someone that would sell that amount no problem. He will give you all the help and advice you need, run all your ideas through him first I would.

Good, thanks.
Got two herds now. One on my own farm, and one on a neighbour's land.
That’s brilliant!! The guy who’s been mentoring me has said he’d love to do it, pending a lottery win 😅
It got me thinking about logistics, but you’ve proved it can be done!
Well done 👍🏻
