i am after a lightweight jacket that you can stick in a backpack and is actually waterproof not showerproof something that you can have on for a full day and still stay dry
Also light enuf that you could have below a waistcoat for a game day
another so called waterproof jacket ended up in the bin tonight after getting soaked today within an hour or so being out in heavy snow and sleet
Thanks for any help

Getting a jacket that's light, waterproof in prolonged downpours and durable is just about impossible imho. The most waterproof and comfortable jackets I've used have been Paramo, a heavy dury Gore-Tex number and a double layer ventile thing. Lightweight didn't apply to any of them.

3 layer Gore-tex for an active sport like ski touring is the closest I’ve found but don’t expect it to be cheap.

my Austrian Army mountain goretex jacket is the most waterproof jacket I own. not to be confused with the standard Austrian army jacket, the mountain version is 3 layer goretex shell type. ive had mine for years and it’s not let me down. Dowside compromises are finding one and they’re not the quietest.

Arktis rainshield are worth a spin.I have a couple for grouse early season, fold into their own pockets and have kept me dry when called on.In the north pennies so we do get weather.
In truth though if it's truly pouring and blowing hard you may need to manage your expectations. It usually finds a way in down your neck eventually.

Wonder what the Royal Navy Goretex stuff is like and the RAF issue ? Apart from being blue ? I'm probably just getting a little lesss hardy these days, but what used to be one rainy day, seems to be two or three. I have become totally disillusioned with goretex - Over the years I have tried higher end walking gear and new military surplus. I wear mine everyday and work in them. Once they get dirty and need to be washed and retreated, they only seem to be waterproof for a few days afterwards. Sthil chainsaw jackets were good, but the recent manufacture much less so. I had a Barbour Durham once which stands out as being waterproof - but a little fragile.

The US ECWCS Goretex jackets are brilliant. Proper Goretex, not the British Army Sympatex rubbish. They are light and not very noisy, very matte finish and pack down quite small. I know some don't like camo though, so I would suggest the aforementioned Austrian Goretex in OD would be an excellent choice.
