What’s in your stalking bag

Lowland stalking, everything mentioned is in the truck.
What do I actually take while stalking?
loaded rifle and a couple of extra rounds, sticks, binos, knife and saw on the belt, thermal mug of tea, wipes, drag line, wind puffer bottle, head torch and my phone are in my pockets.

I carry a Roe sack , inside is a small bag which I carry my knives ,headtorch ,cord and first aid items .In summer I carry a fly net in case I have to leave a deer . The final item is the dog tracking collar , all the items are needed on a 3/4 hour foot stalk . If I was parking the car 100m from a high seat I wouldn't take the bag.

Rifle, sticks, binos and knife are the absolute critical items. I do also have a short bone saw that goes on my belt as well.

I have a little waist bag that I chuck a few other bits in - spare knife, first aid kit and trauma bandages, knife sharpener, buttalo, range finder, fold up pocket chainsaw (basically a length of chainsaw chain with a handle at each end - useful for clearing thick branches around high seats when I'm out), a length of orange webbing, tick hooks and I have a gambrel on the outside of it as well. Basically means I can bodge together enough kit to cater for most situations pretty easily, and sort out simple jobs on the estate while I'm out without needing to remember to go back later.

Its nice not to be weighed down like a donkey when actually hunting. These days we seem to have equipment for everything but its very hard to move well if you are actually hunting on the ground in cover. The thermal is a game changer, so I take that, a face veil makes things much better if the air is still and a puffer bottle of lycopodium spores is very useful. In winter a snood and a hand warmer helps if you stay still for long or sit in a high seat. Sticks are hard to refuse to carry but really cramp one's style if really hunting as opposed to watching from 50+ yards, then moving quietly to another good spot. 90% of the time I will take them, because they make the shot much better.

Sometimes I do carry the knife, gloves and bags but only when I am sure I am going to do quick field job of butchery from the nearest tree.

Generally I leave proper butcher's knives, short rope, pulley, bags, hooks, gloves, head torch, hooks, gambrel in the truck and after the shot either work out how close I can drive to a kill or just drag the roe or muntjac close to the truck if I want to do a proper job of butchery.

A single fresh flake of flint is a lot lighter than a knife, is totally disposable and can be fun to work with but it needs wrapping well in the pocket.

Hello everyone

What are you all taking out with you on a typical deer stalk in terms of equipment, knives and anything really to make things easier for yourself. Thanks
Spread between a pouch that sits under my bino harness and the side pockets of my trousers, and not including the obvious things like knife etc...
-nitrile gloves
-zip lock sandwich bags for pluck
-foldaway roe sack (in pouch)
-drag strop (only if Reds are on the cards)
-first aid kit (at least a tourniquet on me, plus a kit for minor injuries back at the car)
-head torch if evening stalking

I used to cram all sorts of crap in my pockets, which was a pain. Now just recently got a cheap bum bag to hold stuff - which also means that my stalking kit is always just in one place and doesn't need repacked:

Usually I carry:

On person:
  • Rifle
  • Binos
In waist bag:
  • First Aid (Cellox, CAT tourniquet, FFD)
  • Headtorch
  • 2 Cylumes (marking carcass at night before extracting)
  • 2 pairs of nitrile gloves
  • couple small zip ties
  • drag line
  • Warm gloves and buff
  • midge net and repellant (depending on time of year)
  • Handful of spare rounds
  • small flask or small water bottle
  • Buttolo caller (depending on time of year)
  • Range finder
  • 2 x small stainless s hooks
  • SPOT device
  • knife
I was always a bit unsire about the whole waist bag idea - however I am a bit of a convert now - I dont find it to be obtrusive or heavy and means I can keep everything in one place.

Knife, nitrile gloves, butchers string for tying off, butt out tool -all goes in a Sika sack I bought off a member here years ago.

If I'm after bucks, I carry all on my person, can't carry them out so have to drag. Drag rope/harness goes in a poachers pocket.
