What do people currently think about .222 Remington?

Thanks, yes I think will apply for a .222 Remington slot on my FAC and I like BSAs so I will start looking for a BSA mini Mauser in .222 such as a Hunter. On that topic if anyone has a BSA Hunter in .222 Remington going for a reasonable price please let me know!

“222 is dying”!!!
Blasphemy!!!!

.222 BSA CF2 love it to bits would never sell it out to 223 although i have an open slot for one!!!!!!!

Ah.. .222 Beeza CF2. Biggest regret of my shooting life, selling my heavy barrel CF2. Should never have let that rifle go.

And that's another thing about the triple. Not only are used rifles generally cheaper than .223s, there are more better quality ones to choose from made before the current cheap and cheerful/cheerless age.

Finch trouble is everything is today is built greedily when you do the maths, cost price - VAT - GP 60-70% what's it cost to build your weapon of choice??? Not a lot left?????:-|

Anything 80s build you'll rarely go wrong

Have a look at a 527 in either 223 or 222, they will both handle the same. If you go for the 223 try and get the 1 in 9 twist as it handles the heavier bullets very well. (handles 50/55gr well too)

David.

Doesn’t it have a stupid back to front safety catch?
I know this won’t win me many friends, but I find the CZ action rather agricultural. Yuk.

Depends on what you think as back to front. All my other rifles have the safety on the bolt and don't find it difficult going between them

CZ actions can be a little tighter from the factory but are soon run in.

Not all 527s have the safety you mention.
Whenever I’ve had the ‘Back to front’ type safety, and getting ready to shoot, I think...Pull it back, just like readying a hammer gun to fire.

Hi Everyone,

As a bit of fun I am tempted to do some running boar type target shooting competitions and my .308 T4 is far too heavy so I was thinking of getting a smaller, more nimble centrefire rifle. I have shot .223 a lot and so that would be an obvious choice but I have heard people say the .222 Remington was historically an even nicer little cartridge. However a lot of people view it as on its way out. I have browsed around and although the factory .222 ammo is more pricey, the second hand .222 rifles are a bit cheaper so cost wise there doesn't seem to be that much in it. So I was wondering what is the current opinion here about the little old .222 Remington?

Thank you!

I use a CZ 527 action with a walther lother barrel and it's deadly accurate. Group sizes that fit into your little finger nail with factory ammunition such as 40gr Norma vmax, what is not to like about that!

No thanks. My Sako 75 and Tikka 595 .222s are doing their jobs just fine.
When I was looking out for a new .308 back along, I spotted an absolutely mint Sako 75 Varmint in .222 at Ladds of Crediton. It was cheaper than a new 85 sporter and cheaper than just about every mediocre also-ran in the new rifle racks, and vastly superior to pretty much all of them. Someone somewhere has got a peach of a rifle that'll last them a lifetime.

Oddly enough, I ended up buying a beautiful m595 in .308 off Flytie on this forum, and later added a Sako 75 in .243 when I foolishly sold my CF2 .222. If only I could have kept the Beeza to keep the Sako and the Tika company, what a collection I'd have.

Hi, I'm shooting .222 Rem in a Sako A1. I find it's trajectory much flatter than 223. The .222 is a little less powerful than the .223. I don't think there is any significant difference between the two cartridges for Fox, Muntjac and Chinese Water deer. The .222 projects a 50gn bullet at 3140 fps and with muzzle energy of 1095 ft/lb. The .223 projects a 55gn bullet at 3240fps and energy 1280ft/lb. I have used both and vastly prefer the .222.

I have two rifles built to scale for the 222/223 cartridge group. A CZ527 and a Sako 75.
The CZ is chambered 222, I will tell you how much I like it. I had it rebarreled, I could of replaced it for the same price but I didn’t want to. It now wears a heavy barrel and shoots better than me. With minimum load development I got under .300” at 100yds.
As for the trigger the ‘smith thinks it’s a rifle basix one. The same as the CZ550 one you have to shorten the trigger slightly but otherwise a straight swap. Safety is the “right” way round.

Ps.This might be wrong info. Possibly only 550 with right way round safety. Ken.
